Pirates with tanks
Discussion
I do a bit of boating and spoke to a few guys in Southampton when I was last there and info they told were that a lot of these guys are active somalian army and police. Supposed to be very well connected and heavily armed with assualt rifles and rpgs. I'be be very wary about going anywhere near the region. Sod the Suez canal, I'll go the long way round.

The royal navy does escort ships through but these guys are swift and to be fair its a massive bit of water to cover. Its a good 500 miles till you get to open water once you get out of the red sea. Surley it cannot be beyond the world resources to blow these f

The reason Somalia can terrorise shipping is because there is no law or order in the country pretty much like the whole of Africa. Somalia have not had a proper goverment for 17 years.
Obviously you've not been to Africa. Somalia is only a small country in a big continent. Most African countries have as much working law and order as expected in a third world country.[AJ] said:
What I don't understand is that a ship carrying 33 tanks and other weapons couldn't kick the sh*t out of a bunch of skinny pirates!
That will teach the Kenyans. They have almost 1 million of their citizens starving from drought and 15000 refugees displaced from last year election violence and they spent $100m on tanks.[AJ] said:

I would expect that 1)Tanks/weapons not in a usable state (packed for transport)2)not trained to use them anyway.
3)firing a tank from within the hold would not be wise for the ships sea worthiness
I think what is called for here is the revival of the old Q-Ship concept.
None of these scumbags are going within 20 miles of anything being escorted by a warship, but they'd cheerfully go hell for leather at an old rusty cargo ship, waving a couple of RPGs as they go.
At which point, side panels on the rust bucket drop down and our charming nautical entrepeneurs get the full benefit of a dozen or so previously hidden miniguns.
Obviously, any of them not turned into catfood and actually end up in the water should not, out of decency, be fired upon - instead, the Q-Ship would be equipped with a water cannon which would hose them down with a mixture of liquified fish-entrails, cow's guts and sheep offal, in order that the sharks are fully in the mood when they arrive.
Sooner, rather than later, the remaining scumbags would twig that no-one leaving port seems to return, and go on to lead reformed, fruitful and productive lives as health and safety consultants.

Why not just go for sharks with frikin' lasers on their heads??? None of these scumbags are going within 20 miles of anything being escorted by a warship, but they'd cheerfully go hell for leather at an old rusty cargo ship, waving a couple of RPGs as they go.

Now you're just being silly. Sharks can't be trusted with lasers. They'd be dicking about shining them at airliners and police helicopters, or getting hold of some dry ice and making "swoosh, swoosh" noises while playing at light-sabres.Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
