Just a little rant, I purchased some books yesterday and thought the price was a little high so I checked when I go home online and the books buying through Smiths website are £20 cheaper. I phoned them today to ask why this is the case and they said if you dont liek it take them back to the shop :-(.

Dont buy from Smith's shops you are being stung.

Sorry, pedantically edited for speeling.

£20 is a lot to charge you for the bonus of being served by some spotty oik.

I can't honestly see why anybody would shop at smiths. Everything there is more expensive than anywhere else, so is Woolworths - the High Street only exists out of people's stupidity.

Edited to add that GAME and Gamestation are the worst- they offer you peanuts on Trade-ins and sell your own product back to you at double the price - not to mention that the staff are arrogant and rude (GAME is the worst for this).

A business which basically buys products for a pittance and sells them back for a fortune is really almost theft.

However, I have thought of one way to make a fortune off them, with nothing more than an HP Laptop with Lightscribe, a colour printer, blank cds, and DVD cases. Basically, make a mock-up copy of any game and then trade it in for cash, because you see GAME don't actually check the content of discs, merely the scratches on them.

Quick question, how do you get around the whole bottom of the DVD being purple thing?

Anyway, the high st is mostly one big con. Avoided at most times.

I always find that W H Smiths smells funny - no matter what store you go in, they all smell the same.

And after that pointless posting, here is another one about the staff of GAME:

Worst Staff EVER!!

saying its a con, or questionning why should the high street be more expensicve then the internet, is to experience the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

There is some pleasure in shopping. Or looking at the gifts. Of talking tko someone face-to-face. Knowing that you can take the product back yourself. Knowing that you can try things on befreohand. I know this is lost on you, but shops exist- and some do very indeed- from this purpose. Claire hasent chosen her wedding dress "online because its cheaper" and I'm not choosing what I wear online just because its cheaper. I want to know what I am wearing...

I think clothes are the exception.

You can look at gifts in the shop and buy online.

Strange. So you're willing to spend time in a shop looking at things, possibly engaging their staff in conversation, asking to look over things, comparing this and that (maybe in other shops).
...

.... And you think its a "big con", and you should buy everything online???. I think thats taking the Michael somewhat.

Exactly. If everyone did that, then you wouldn't be able to look at gifts in the shop as the shop would have closed.

I don't spend time in Shops, the only shop I spend time in is either a clothes shop or Costco.

I don't engage staff in conversation because, well why would you want to?

WH Smith (retail shops, they'll ringfence and keep distribution and on line) are one of my predictions for the next major high street casualty along with Woolworths, Boots, Land of Leather and DFS.

What annoys me about Smith's is what they stock. I popped into the one in Paddington the other day for a small bottle of water, or a can of coke. The only things I could have bought were a 500ml bottle of Coke, which is always rubbish, and a 750ml bottle of water.

It annoys me that they will only sell the largest size of drink, which means everything is expensive, but as you are at a train station . airport you have no other option.

Bad example - Paddington has a Sainsbury's and M&S too, but I know what you mean wink
