Moving to Dubai
Discussion
Do we have any PHERS in UAE?
An opportunity is in the pipeline where i may decide to move to Dubai for a few years due to more business for me.
If you have moved there, or considering it, what are your thoughts?
So far my pro's are sunshine, exceptional business for me, cool cars, amazing way in which they work, tax free
con's; can't think of many

Cons... they are a bunch of f
king nazis who lock you up for four years because you happened to tread on a discarded roach on the way to the airport, or because you engage in a bit of nookie on the beach. Unless you are a rich local of course, in which case you can get away with murder. No way on earth would I ever go there.
I live in Dubai and have done for over three years! just got back from manchester after a 2 week holiday there!!! (i know weird) but overall am much better off than i was in UK i plan a return too the UK in maybe 2-3 years but at the moment enjoying it, of course like any move there are pro's and con's but tax free, sunshine everyday and good standard of living keep me happy, oh yeah cheap cars and petrol also a big plus!! i bought a new golf gti dsg fully loaded from dealer for about 12k gbp!! and a cayman s for 28k gbp so all in all happy days!! P.M me if you want the con's

There are a few PHers out here, working in different industries lots of pros and quite a few cons too. Been here 9 years now and seen a lot of changes.
PRO. - in no order
Safe can pretty much walk anywhere in this town
Great winter weather
Young population
Cheap domestic labour
Generally a better standard of living
Cheap cars
Cheap gas
Great job opportunities and the chance to move up in a career
Booming economy lots of jobs
Some great bars and restaurants
Cosmopolitan
Beach and desert
Tolerant for the middle east
Beer
In a great spot to travel from
Great roads
You can buy property and prices are rising
The biggest issue is that you are a mercenary in their country, if you cannot live with all this means then do not consider it
Some cons
Safe can pretty much walk anywhere in this town - While it is safe for a guy, women can be hassled and worse, particularly if drunk or lost, rape is an issue here. For brits one of the worse risks is the police, there are many laws here that seem excessive or stupid to some, they will however be brutally enforced especially if the protagonist is pissed
Great winter weather - utterly unbearable summer weather temps to 45edgree c and 80% humidity
Young population - very transient population with little family support
Cheap domestic labour - not many cons here.....except you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
Generally a better standard of living - Inflation is rising at 11% a year and much more in some areas
Cheap cars - limited choice
Cheap gas - nope nothing bad there either
Great job opportunities and the chance to move up in a career - if you are in the right business, also the company owns your ass. No workers rights of any sort, no right to strike and you can be banned if you try to change jobs
Booming economy lots of jobs -rampant inflation currency link to the US $ so subject to its falls
Some great bars and restaurants - some really crap ones almost all bars are in hotels so not many provide a real choice
Cosmopolitan - very foreign to many, the most visible population here is Indian and other sub continent countries, many are very poor and this can feel more like India or Pakistan in places rather than a sparkling modern city.
Beach and desert - beach access is becoming more and more restricted by development that some might consider blight.
Tolerant for the middle east - for the middle east - every year many Brits (and others) test how tolerant this place is, usually they come a very distant second.
Beer - While there is beer and other booze it is very expensive.
In a great spot to travel from - very expensive to travel from
Great roads - horrendous traffic jams
Property is horrendously expensive and rent in particular is way too expensive
There are many more particularity the inequality of treatment between races that rancor but in the end it is their country and we are dependant on still being made welcome. All of the Dubai boom is driven by one man, anything could happen should he step under a bus tomorrow. It is also sometimes difficult to invest a lot in a country knowing you could be thrown out at any time for what would be a trivial matter in the UK.
Me I like it here, we have bought a place to stop being at the mercy of crooked landlords but accept that this is a risk.

That is not the point. It is those laws themselves that I am criticising. I would not go anywhere near a country which implemented such laws.rickybouy said:

No.
My opinion on the place was originally entirely neutral.
It has been changed to a strongly negative opinion by reading posts on PH from people who have been there.
Which is exactly the same source of information that the OP was hoping to tap.
Pigeon,
Your uninformed, i agree that there are certain rules i do not agree with, but the crime rate is in fact fairly low here obviously media cover up etc does go on and there are problems like every country but if you haven't lived here i don't understand how you can comment? i am of very open mind and there are issues here but it's a new country, but the UK is a old country and there are just as many, if not more problems there.
I am not having a pop but the UK press is full of "sex on the beach" style bulls
t!! as wel as every night someone is stabbed in th UK if you believe all you read you'll end up living in a cave!! although my place here is anything but a cave

Nope.. Sorry Pigeon... It's nothing but sensationalism. I've been there for years, as have others, and haven't had a problem. The issue are with people who have no respect for the place they are in. Be 'normal' and not an utter idiot, and you'll have no bother.
That is more than likely the problem, his IS an idiot, and so would be one of the dope tw*ts that gets done over. Rules are set in stone, and if broken then they will come down on you like a ton of bricks, but for some reason we here in Britain seem to think thats wrong!?, and then we have threads on here complaining on how sh*te this country has become with crime etc...!??My brother has been there for over 10 years. Has yet to be locked up! Suppose theres always a first time though!
Even managed to find himself a girlfriend so there are single women there too!
He loves it out there, guess thats why he has stayed all this time. I visit fairly often and its ok, but he definitely has a great lifestyle albeit artifical.

Ive been with work on a gas pipline. Nice place but i found there to be very little to do, its either too hot, ok there is shopping and indoor skiing but i can do all that down the road at the trafford center.
Traffic jams are a big problem and the place stinks at rush hour with all the big engined cars pumping out fumes at a standstill.

I'm a PH'er in Dubai and actually beer here is now about the same price as it is in the UK.
Nearly everyone's standard of living here is higher, except for some Indian families who have more job opportunities but very expensive accommodation.
Accommodation is a huge problem, despite flats springing up like mushrooms, it's because of Russian Warlords buying them all up and selling them at a much more ridiculous price- Bear in mind property values are inelastic and the fact that Dubai is the biggest money laundering place in the Middle East.
Most savvy expats live in Mirdif, a distant, hideous sprawling sandy suburb full of McMansions. Dubai Marina is becoming a good place to live, if you're in Real Estate or Banking you'll get an allowance that will cover it.
However, you are stuck with the same problem as any other development here: the more desirable the surroundings eventually become, the more expensive it becomes.
If you took my advice, you'd sell your house right now and buy a recently announced property (If it hasn't already been snapped up.) By the time it's built it will of more than doubled in value.
Healthcare is brilliant, all private, and the hospitals are top notch.
You'll still be much richer than in the UK if you play your cards right.
No income tax, although the government gets greedier each year it seems- already for some roads you have to pay tolls to go along.
However, they are launching a world class metro in about September 09, which is one of the only erections ever to actually be hugely ahead of schedule. At the rate they're going at it, it'll be done by Christmas- what with 1 line already functioning (technically) and most stations at 50% completion.
Come here! You'll love it.
