Looking at the world today we don't appear to have anyone really pushing the boundrys of what is possible in a big way.

We don't have goverment funded loonys flinging themselves at stupidly higher and higher speeds through the air, we don't folk jumping off weather balloons, we don't have huge leaps in engineering, we don't have the spirit of the Apollo program.

The only thing of note of the past decade is the x-prize

So where are they and if we don't have them why not

elf 'n' safety.
emphasis on passing exams through conformity and no reward for imagination and creativity.
culture of everything being someone else's responsibility.
excessive use of t'interweb instead of working things out for oneself.

We still have all the things you mentioned, they have that rediculous thing in Switzerland thats trying to recreate the big bang (But is broken) you have that Alain Robidoux free climbing up buildings, talking of which in Dubai that are breaking the boundaries in building.
