I had an excellent dentist but he retired.

I transferred to a local NHS dentist practise.

Saw a young dentist who filled one of my teeth (that was giving me pain) she said it was near the nerve etc but 2 months later I was still getting pain with anything hot or cold.

I asked to see someone else in the practise for a second opinion and saw an older guy who removed the filling and placed a temporary one in (no amalgum so it doesn't transfer the heat apparently) He suggests I'll probably need a Root Canal.

BUT he then re did 2 of my old fillings and they both hurt now (4 days later) and they didn't before.

So am I (at 38) old, and this is normal ?

Or is he and his junior useless ?

If so do I just transfer practise again / how do I find a good dentist ?

Valid post.

A white coat.

She was young and pretty enough for me to want to ask out

(but as I was getting married the next day, thought I'd best not)

ok I am going to try and answer this question to the best of my knowledge.
1) If it is near the root canal and the filling is deep sometimes you can get away with out pain other times it is going to flair up. By taking out the nevre means you are killing the tooth so the tooth is dead. Dentists would rather not do this as sometimes a tooth will settle and no other treatment is needed. A dentist cannot help if the tooth flairs up. Its a case of luck.
2) other fillings might have had leaks in them with decay going down the side of the filling again these could have been deep. Hence the reason you can be having pain.

I recently changed as my dentist retired, moved to a new NHS dentist, she immediately insisted that I needed 2 fillings.. that's where the nightmare began..

I had the teeth drilled and filled, hurt for ages, then it got to the point where I couldn't put pressure on them (to chew) and had them redone (had a temporary for a week as well) still got one a little sensitive to brushing and the other isn't liking hot/cold, this is now months later. I've only just hit 24 and I'm thinking rubbish dentist tbh not only that she's Polish (from what I can tell) and her English isn't great frown

Not alone I see frown

Redgriff500, I was in exactly the same position as you with regards to a filling near the nerve chamber a few months back. I got some good advice on the link below:

click|http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=551772&hw=+%2Broot+%2Bcanal&nmt=Root%20canal%20question

The consensus appeared to be that it was only a matter of time before a root canal was needed and they were right. I had it started about a month ago and then after a few nasty abscesses had it completed last week.

The root canal itself really is no problem, but the antibiotic -metronidazole- they gave me between procedures provoked a really nasty reaction in me. And no, I did not touch a drop of alcohol with it either. Not even mouthwash. My advice, root canal is easy but if you're unfortunate enough to need antibiotics ask them to try amoxicillin instead.

There seems to be a "thing" where when you move dentists they insist on removing fillings. This seems to be on the basis that they crack after time and need replacing. The wiser ones just maintain what is there.

When I hit early 40s, it seemed the only treatment availabe for me was root canal surgery. It could of course be that my dentist missed the other classes at dentist school and so became a master of root canals, rather than being so-so at general dentistry. Ont the whole root canal stuff is OK just make sure you go for tons of coke novocaine when he/she gets those tiny little round files/reamers out and tries to clean up the hole. They're a bugger when they catch the last remaining bits of live nerve ending.

Did young female dentist rest breasticles against your head during treatment (accidently on purpose maybe?). It's your body's way of saying "go back I liked it".

I need a root canal treatment. my dentist wants £450 so Ive been eating pain killers like smarties for 3 weeks can't find an NHS dentist anywhere.

this evening I spoke with an NHS out of hours drop in surgery because I cant stand the pain any more. they told me that no NHS dentist would do a root canal anyway so I have two choices.
rip tooth out or pay through nose.

nice, bet if I was on the fking dole they would do it. I knew there was a reason Ive worked and payed NI all my life.

off to take another 500mg Parcetamol and 400mg profen. that sorts it for an hour or so

Thanks for all the replies, it looks like I'm unlucky rather than they are inept.

I think he gets amalgum cheap though as he seems to slosh it everywhere, I can still taste it !

Are you sure ?

I thought the same but my Dr told me to call NHS direct and ask them for a list of NHS dentists they gave me 5 tel numbers of dentists within 2 miles of my house.

Whilst it isn't free at £192 IIRC its about half the price private places charge or as someone else suggested try going to the teaching hospital and its free (I believe)

Wether your on the dole or not makes no difference. NHS pay to the dentist remains constant.

NHS dentists will do root canals, it'll cost you 44.60 or 198 if you need/want a crown.
