Brother in law has expressed an interest in general labouring etc on an off shore rig or similar

I know diddly squat about said employment so just wondering:

What the hours are like, i.e. is it 21 days on 7 days off?

Whats the money like?

and most importantly any website etc for recruitment contacts?

Thanks

2 weeks on, 2 weeks off.
2 weeks on, 3 weeks off.
4 weeks on, 4 weeks off.
2 weeks on, 4 weeks off (norwegian contract).

Service companies work X days on X days off

Money generally good, as with everything else the higher up you get the more you get paid.
General maintenance side would be best starting off as a roustabout > roughneck > derrickman > assistant driller > driller > night pusher > pusher........

just type in 'offshore jobs' into google and you'l find a few

If he wants to work offshore, tell him to get himself an offshore survival ticket. It will go a long way to convincing an employer you are serious, (their biggest problem are people taking jobs, then leaving, as they don't like to be away). Having a commintment prior to an interview is a very good thing to have. Look up Nutec, (the ones I use), and give them a call. It's a 5 day course. An additional one would be an FRC course.

Whats the best way to get started working offshore, if you dont have any previous experience?

I dont mind working my way up from the bottom at all, infat its a good way to learn IMO. would I need experience in any particular roles or can you go in as a novice / apprentice and work away to climbing the ladder?

Well in my industry you are supposed to have a degree, but I started from the bottom, and worked my way 'up'.. (I use the phrase up loosely here!). Most places offshore need experience you can't get elsewhere, so just go in from the bottom, and work your way up. It will be hard work, and dangerous at times, but the money, and career is well worth it.

Thanks Blue Meanie.

Unfortunately I dont have a degree, but I am not afraid of hard work.

I shall have a hunt around on the net and see what other info comes up, its something that has gone through my mind quite a few times, but at the time I was employed. Situations change, and a change like this could be a very good thing for me.

Anyone UK based know of any good companies to go through, speak with?

ETA: just had a look in the Scottish section as suggested and got some good info. Looks like I will need to spend money to make money, so time to get saving and working stty jobs to get somewhere, which I can live with. Plus I have some bits n pieces I can sell to make some extra cash too

I don't either, but I wouldn't let that put you off...
Here's the link for Nutec

http://www.nutecuk.com/

On a bit of a tangent, but the Nutec 'facility' in Peterhead was where I was when 9/11 was going down. Huddled together round a radio. The yanks on the course didn't get home for about a week.

Looking for a roustabout role, not while there is a hole in his bum will he get one unless he has experience offshore or knows someone. I am just starting offshore (On survey ships) i have my offshore survival and medical. I spent one day a week chasing up all the drilling companies and agencies and getting knocked back. Having applied for about 100 plus roles i got two interviews and two job offers. My trade experience is electronics and it is this that got me a job. There are some 3000 plus people with medical, survival course and greenhand course all looking for work. Absolutely anyone can be a roustabout and as it is the entry position to working offshore supply far outweighs demand. I wish him luck, but woulkd reccomend doing a google search. Some people have been trying for 3 years plus. Also try www.toolpusher.comwww.oilcareers.co.uk just search google for anything further.

Drilling 5 metre lengths out of the ground for the geologists to look at. Could have done similar role with gardline but plumped for fugro overall.

Fugro are a big friggin company. We do the same, just on a HUGE scale, and a lot deeper, without the need for Black and Decker drills. smile

I find it funny when people talk about the profits oil companies have, when you consider how many people they employ, and the assets they have at risk. You see some of the installations all over the wprld and they are staggering.

here's a wee video of one I was working off, as well as the crap vessels I was working on... (D-Island in the Caspian sea), and rather than build an installation, they build an island. Staggering expense. This was only one of many as well.

Oooh,. and one from just messing in the FRC smile

biggrin.

From what these 2 are costing you might say so !
.
Under construction at the moment.
They will be 2 of the biggest, and most deepest drilling rigs ever built.
