Lib Dems at it again
Discussion
The Sun said:
DRIVERS of big gas guzzlers should be forced to pay huge road taxes of up to £2,500 a year, the Liberal Democrats said today.
Transport spokesman Norman Baker wants to use the cash to fund £1,000 handouts to those who buy "green" cars.
But for those who drive 4x4's and other large family cars – a showroom tax of £500, alongside £2,000 a year Vehicle Excise Duty would be imposed.
The party would create a new Band M for the likes of some Range Rover and Toyota Land Cruiser models with emissions of over 255g per CO2/km.
This is more than DOUBLE the government's proposal of a showroom tax and VED included at £950 from April 2010.
It comes the day after Lib Dem Treasury spokesman Vince Cable mooted the idea of hitting motorists with an extra 20p in tax on a litre of petrol.
Mr Baker will outline his plan at the Lib Dem's annual rally in Bournemouth.
He will insist: "The Liberal Democrats are the only party with a serious plan to tackle the major challenges our transport system faces."
The Lib Dems are committed to £8billion of green taxes to part fund a 4p cut in the basic rate of tax.
But the proposals were blasted by motoring groups as unworkable.
Paul Watters of the AA said the move would go against families and those who need large cars.

CASH-STRAPPED motorists could be hit with an EXTRA 20p or more tax on a litre of petrol, warned Liberal Democrats Party documentation.
Treasury spokesman Vince Cable said Britain’s politicians must have the “courage and maturity” to press ahead with green taxes on oil despite the credit crunch.
In his keynote speech at the Lib Dem’s conference in Bournemouth, Mr Cable pointed to the case of Norway which has vast oil stocks under the North Sea.
He said: “They could easily have the cheapest petrol in Europe. But in reality they have chosen to have the most expensive petrol, and diesel.
“Why - you might ask - are Norwegian road hauliers and motorists not rioting on the streets of Oslo?
“Their political leaders say that resource conservation and the environment must come first.
“They advocate green taxes on oil. Britain needs a political party with the courage and maturity to spell out the same message.”
But Mr Cable appeared to have lost his nerve after it was revealed he had altered his own speech to make it more palatable to millions of hard-pressed motorists.
The first draft of his speech highlighted how Norwegian drivers were paying 20p a litre for petrol.
By the time it was delivered, the figure had been omitted.
Mr Cable said successive governments had "squandered" the UK’s valuable oil reserves over the past 25 years.
But the Lib Dems have vowed not to retreat on green taxes and are pledging to raise £8billion on such levies.

Brings new meaning to the phrase "laying a cable"...
BTW, is that a typo or are Norwegians really paying 20p a litre? I can't believe that! Crude oil costs more than that a litre doesn't it?

ETA:
I swear these people want us living in mud huts - but that's OK as long as there are lots of trees and oil and coal still in the ground that we're not using...

That serious plan being "stop people travelling and take Britain back to the Dark Ages"

So, as Labour implode, giving the loonies their best chance since Paddy Ashdown said "Yeah, I screwed her, so what?", this pillock decides to shoot them in the leg! Class.
Crazy isn't it, all they need to do is place themselves slightly to the centre of Labour, and promise not to raise taxes and the middle classes will flood in as they pile out of New Labour.
Although I think that Labour are desperately out of touch with the voting public, I have to say that the Lib Dems are even worse.
Then again, when your voters consist almost entirely of pensioners who have forgotten what work was and have trouble remembering their grand childrens names, slipping a few thousand on the car tax and an extra 20p a litre wont make the blindest difference to them - what with their Honda Jazz's and weekly trip to the garden centre.... doesn't quite affect them does it?
Nope, for the vast majority of everyone else, we get to pay the penalty for everything else.
Well guess what Mr Clegg -
off you
sucker
Easy to tax the hell out of everyone when you are sitting pretty. Try doing it from my side of the fence and see how you like it.

Don't worry, they currently have 12% support and with plans like that i cannot see that going anywhere but south.
But what would happen if they found themselves having the "balance of power" should the next election be a close run thing....?esselte said:

Actually I heard the latest lib dem proposal and it made sense.
Abolish road tax AND fuel duty, put road pricing on main roads where there is a public transport alternative, but not on minor roads where there isn't.
Sounds sensible to me?
Factor in the cost of collection and it's a disaster waiting to happen.Abolish road tax AND fuel duty, put road pricing on main roads where there is a public transport alternative, but not on minor roads where there isn't.
