Inspired by the drafting thread... What would your reaction be if a large scale conflict started tomorrow and your draft papers came through?

Both my grandfathers fought in WWII and I'm proud that they did so, however I honestly can't imagine risking my life for the wreck that this country has now become. Is there really anything worth fighting for any more? Would you want to spend your last moments in a puddle somewhere knowing that Gordon Brown was safe in his bunker?

I think the appetite for fighting overseas has gone, but if an invading army was landing in Kent, we might fight if only to protect our families.

Or would we? Maybe we'd be like the French and say 'Table for 1,000 M'sieur?' Perhaps the new regime would be better than the current one and we'd sign up. Dunno. Depends on the nature of the invader I suppose. If the price for not fighting was to be herded into gas chambers and killed, it might inspire a glimmer of resistance. What if it was some kind of organised Taliban army and if you didn't kill them you'd spend the last days of your life chained to a radiator in a dark basement and tortured? That would have me reaching for the Bren...

Because your forbears fought so you could say that?

Happily if it was for something I believed in, we might have chavs and all sorts of other problems but if it came any where close to WW1 / 2 type war I'd be near the front of the queue!

We had an thread about 16 year olds being drafted a while ago. I think I said all I wanted to on this subject then.

Hmm Put like that might make me slip on my fighting coat.

Yes. Having already served in HM Forces, I guess I'd pop back for a repeat performance if the call ever came. Although quite what use they'd have for a 40-a-day pisshead doesn't immediately spring to mind. Folding blankets, perhaps? wink

Stop and think for a moment about how many young men lied about their age to get into the forces for WW1 - could you see the youth of today doing that?

In principal yes.

I was punched by an un-gallicly efficient Gendarme at Lemons once - would that qualify?

Already spent some time in the forces, but would happily sign up again. But then there's a bit of a forces family tradition. I doubt there would be many in this country willing to give something/everything to help in a time of real crisis.

In the event of the UK being invaded by ground forces I would join the resistance. Sadly my skills are so poor I would either be cannon-fodder or need to be assigned to do something covert but helpful - which I would gladly do.

I cant really see this issue coming up in the near term, to be honest.

But even if it did, I strongly suspect my only real issue would be if someone directly threatened me and my family. Other than that, the fkwits in power (currently) NEED to be replaced.

I've spoken to several people who fought in WW2,who feel their efforts were wasted, due to the state the country is in. frown

No probs - us ex-RAF types have to stick together.
