Anyone buy HBOS shares?
Discussion
I have no experience of stock market trading but am considering buying £100 or so worth of HBOS shares. Prices back down to near 200p now.
Am I stupid to do this? Obviously nothing can be predicted and this is a bit of fun also, but if HBOS survive this 'recession', it may pay off in the future.

How much commission are you going to have to pay?
Stamp duty IIRC £15 oddBroker fees buying fees
Broker selling fees.
In all honesty youd need a massive % increase to cancel out the fees - instead you shouldnt really invest in any single stock with less than £1k and even thats low.
If you only have £100 to risk then go for a Unit trust instead thats Far cheaper

My Bullbearings account is currently showing I have made a loss of £190,000 on my HBOS shares I bought yesterday.
Thus rendering me bankrupt
Glad its not real though even if I could afford to lose that much it would be heart breaking.
How many did you "buy" - a million of them? Thus rendering me bankrupt

I can only really afford to lose £100 at the moment to be honest.

Forget about the ISA Unit trust as it can be taxed or untaxed depending on if you put it into an ISA or not.
Unit trusts are the easiest & cheapest way to get into stock market investment which will/should give you full diversification.
IIRC you need to hold 29 different stocks from the different sectors to be fully diversified and due to buy & sell costs actual individual shares that would be a min of £29k.
With unit trusts its a managed fund - the unit trust isnt physically on the exchange basically its the "share" price of the assets within the fund - be it commercial prop, gold, oil, Telecoms, banks - or what ever. There are thousands of different Unit trust funds all offereing different sectors & more importantly different fund managers, some mgrs have a history of being lucky others not as good others have LONG history of beating the markets.
Unit trust fees will be annual/qtr/monthly all depending and each one will be slightly different (generally the better the Fund Mgr the higher the fee as he costs them more & the expectation that the fund will do better than others). It is quoted as a % fee and will be deducted from the dividends you will earn.
Please dont buy any unit trusts/OEIC's until you have fully read up and understand them.
Finally Unit trust is the simplest & lest risky of getting into equity, buying individual shares is the most risky (unluckily for me in this instance I have lots of individual shares and not many unit trusts) basically if it goes bust you lose 100% - in a unit trust it would be pretty spectacular if every asset suddenly was worthless - but still in theory possible).
