Hiya,

With all this talk of the money markets today - some of it very informed, some of it total tosh biggrin - what's the actual consensus on savings? Should people banking with HBOS stay, or should they go?

Confused of Bucks. confused

Will jobs be lost in HBOS then or are they safe for the time being?

My FIL has been in money for 50 odd years, you couldn't get him to panic about money if you tried, and is very scornful of pretty much every media release on finance ever made (unless it's commentary he's been asked to do by one of the broadsheets hehe )

Says bucket loads to me that he moved all his stuff from them a few months back predicting they were not looking rosy...

No. Our son has a significant amount in there though, saved up for when he wants to buy his first car. I don't want to be the one to explain to him that we have to go through a long and messy process to get his money back for him...

There is a guarantee on all savings of less than £30k ish (someone will have the exact figure)

So even if they went bust, you cant lose your savings if less than that figure.

Cool - thanks Goochie. But how do we get it back if they go down? Is it a long and complex process, or straightforward?

Tempted to go down there now and close the account...

Well yeah - but it's for his university education, gap year and all that stuff as well. wink It's an account we started for him when he was born - I pay into it every month. It's a good way of making sure I don't get my mitts on the money and spend it all on cars myself. biggrin

Exactly. The lemmings who run to withdraw their (guaranteed in 99% of cases) deposits make their fears fulfil themselves.

And just as an aside - that 30k amount which is guaranteed, is that just for a single account, or for all accounts within a single bank?

See? Told you I knew nowt about finance...
