Once upon a time, when my wife was but a girl, and I was but a boy, she told me I couldn't buy a motorbike. So incenced was I that I finished with her and bought a Z500. Anyway, we got back together and 23 years she thinks she can use emotional blackmail anytime she like.

In her view cavaliers are boring, average cars, and the best place for them is the scrap heap.

I can actually see her point, but I have a sleeper plan that I've not mentioned to her (which would make it worse)

I've told her, I'm looking for one, and when I find the right one I will buy it.
She's told me, she'll pack my bags for me if that happens.
I've told her emotional blackmail won't wash and I expect her support, unless she wants to be seen as controlling.

I’m happy for anyone and everyone to shout “Get some balls!” , but I just think she’d make a great wife swap subject.

I’d adverse to conflict, but I think the approach is to mention EVERY mk2 cavalier that is for sale UK wide and comment on the good points and the bad points, basically grinding her down, and reminding her every day that I am going to buy one. And when the right one come up, just do it.

TBH it’s now a point of principal.

Should we sign up for wife swap ?

Averse, not adverse.
Principle, not principal.

There are worse things than Vauxhall Can'o'beer ownership.

Like genocide, paedophilia, landmines killing innocent civilians, 'customising' Corsas, er... and, I'm sure there are some others.

But in all conscience, I can't disagree significantly with your wife.

I must be misreading your post Mr Pod.

For some reason, I thought you meant that you wanted to buy a Vauxhall Cavalier!

Buy the Cavalier and I hope she kicks you out rather than leaves.

That way you get to live in your dream car and all your OH's new fellas get to shag her in the ....... erm......marital bed!

I expect she'll simply withhold the sex and you'll back down like a good 'un.

If she leaves you, you'll be fine though as you'll now be the proud owner of a rubbish Cavalier with no hope of ever getting a shag again.

Oh. . .

I'm with your wife on this one. Some things are simply not done - buying a Poxhall Chavalier is one of them...unless you live on a rundown council estate.

grow some, sunshine!

when the bills are paid and you have pulled your tripes out all week, you can buy whatever you want even if that is a Cavalier, if she has a problem with that, kick her out, see if she can find someone else as accommodating.

That's not emotional blackmail. Emotional blackmail is tears and tantrums. All your wife is doing is reminding you of the natural law of cause-and-effect.

Are you telling us that you only want a Cavalier because your wife doesn't want one? In that case you're as bad as she is.

I have no real disagreement with the fact that the car of my dreams is hardly an Aston.

Cause and Effect ? Not really. For her, it's about being in control.

No, I don't want one because she does not want one. I want one, because I don't like modern cars much and I think that the early 80's FWD vauxhalls was a milestone. I'd consider a mk1 astra, but a cavalier hatch is more practical and comfortable. I want one, because I've had 4 and know what I like.

Have you driven one ? I guess not.

Each to his own. I've managed to sample all sorts of cars over the years as hire cars and pool cars, and I think the Cav mk2 has everything a car should have.

You might. Some people collect stamps. Others collect toys they had at six. Nothing wrong in it, just one man's obsession.
