I need to get a digital passport photo for a TFL photocard.

The requirement is that the photo must be atleast 300dpi in resolution. I thought this was only to do with printing?

In any case, I have a bmp file which is 470kb and around 400pixels by 300 pixels. It was taken on a Sony digital cam at 3mp setting. The file properties say the depth is 24 bits.

Basically will this satisfy the 300dpi requirement? If not, what can I do to remedy this, bearing in mind the file cannot be larger then 1mb.

Thanks in advance.

Well you have two parts! How big does it need to be? Basically:

Resolution = pixels / size (ie Dots per inch)
therefore :
size (inches) = pixel dimensions/300

So @300dpi a 400x300 px image works out at 1.3333inch by 1 inch. (image res/300dpi)

Thanks for your help.

I doubt it'll be printed on the card at any bigger then passport size, so 1.4"x1.8".

So am I right in saying that to achieve 300dpi, it needs to be 420 pixels by 540 pixels approx. or bigger to satisfy the requirments.

Picture quality has deteriorated by sizing up to this size, but I guess given the size of the printout this shouldn't matter.

Save in any format but bmp for a start as they are much larger then the equivalent image in .jpeg, .png etc.

You could have sat in the photo booth at your nearest Tesco and got it done hours ago, no need for such fuss over a simple mugshot.

They are so ass rapingly expensive, something like £5 for three.

Costco do 8 for £1.80
