Am off to Munich with friends on the 23rd for Oktoberfest. Anyone from here going? Anyone been before? Any "must-dos" whilst we are there?

Any pointers appreciated.

get there early (as in 11/midday) and get on the tables that aren't booked from 6pm, they're by far and away the best ones with everyone dancing on the tables and generally getting hammered. Oh and don't go outside the tent once you get into the evening as they wont let you back in.

Apart from that, drink shedloads and try not to be sick on any of the rides outside!! thumbup

I went about 5 years ago with my old company. I just got completely plastered in order to put up with the stupid dancing, terrible music and eating radishes and chicken. Wasn't that impressed to be honest but it didn't cost me anything.

I've been twice and it's a great laugh. If you get there late, it can be a nightmare trying to get in one of the tents. I've been let in through side doors and kitchens so it's always worth loitering around outside and waiting.

When you get inside, find a table and wait to get served (they don't have bars), stand on tables, jump up and down, drinking / spilling steins of lager everywhere and enjoy.

The tents close at about 22:30. The way I always looked at it was you have 12 - 15 tents with 8000 odd people in each which adds up to a shed load of people on the lash drink

Never been to the festival but have been on the lash in Germany many a time and agree with you completely. No agro AND no hangover!

What's the fancy-dress situation ? I am going on Sunday and am interested in some 'hosen, but this could be seen as taking the piss a bit too much. I don't want to upset the fraus. Are there many people walking around in these outfits or is it genuine stuff only ?

In the funfair outside is a helter-skelter which involves a travelator to get up in to it.

Try it hehe

That's because all beer in Germany is made without adding any preservatives or anything artificial. It has to be made with pure water by law - unlike the chemkical ale sold in the UK smile

There are plenty of people wearing Pinocchio costumes. You'll fit right in.

The real ones are hand made from deerskin or something, and there's a bit of fuss at the moment from traditionalists objecting to far east imports. PVC is likely to get you into some interesting conversations, but you won't get lynched or anything.

Great atmosphere and I love the spicy pork. No aggro and it's great to see pissed Germans in hosen dancing on the tables. The fun fair is pretty cool too. Need to go again!

There will be a lot of Aussies and Yanks there.
