What is it with the media and downright blatant lying?

Earlier on today, I was watching the 'newly released, never before seen' footage of McCain in Vietnam being handed over to the authorities on his release. This was on the BBC. Thing is though, the BBC showed this exact same footage a few months ago. But this time, the story is that the footage is 'new' and that in the US there is controversy over its release at this time, like it was all new and fresh and strategically released as part of his campaign.

WTF? this is not new, it's been shown before, and by the BBC only a few months back too!!! Yet here they are playing it dumb like it was all new.

Now, it's just been on again, this time on channel five, and completely unprompted by me, Mrs BG watched it and said "That's not new, it was shown months ago, the limp and everything", yet C5 are also reporting it as 'New and never before seen footage'.

Switch over to BBC again, and it's the same thing all over again, and still they insist it is all 'New, never before seen'. Well, you lying lying toe rags, you showed it yonks ago, when it wasn't a big news story in the US, it was just some archive footage of McCain in Vietnam.

Oooh! I do feel better now, that was like catharsis.

Yesterday Evening Stanadrd :

" A quarter of Londoners would pay £100K to get their kids in the right school".

Intro paragraph said the same thing.

When you read it, 2% said they would be prepared to pay up to £100K to move to a house in the right area for the right schools. Another 21% would pay up to £5K. From that the ES gets to; " A quarter of Londoners would pay £100K to get their kids in the right school" which is technically correct because when asked 23% said they would pay more and sopme would pay up to £100K.

It's always fun trying to guess the bottom line from the headline.

BECKHAM IN GAY SHOCK - David Beckham was shocked when someone called him gay
TOAST CANCER LINK - Toast was eaten by over 90% of Cancer sufferers in the UK at some stage in their life
RUSSIAN DEATH RAY THREAT - it'd be terrible if the Russians had a death ray.

What always winds me up is how inaccurate stuff is when the news item is about something I actually know about fairly well. Only then makes me wonder how wrong the rest of it is.

Cases that I deal with are reported pretty frequently in the media.

Oftentimes the reports are such a bizarre twisting of the truth that it is difficult even to identify which case they are reporting.

Local rags are the worst for this, the tabloids are absolutely terrible and even the more highbrow media manage to put a spin on the truth.

It is pretty depressing, as I can only assume that everything that I see, read or hear is similarly tainted by the journalist, the editor or the producer.

But the worst offenders by far are politicians, who live in their own fantasy world of complete makebelief.

This story was also reported on News 24, and they had an interview with the Swedish journalist who discovered the footage. He was asked "When did you discover the footage?" and he replied, "Earlier this summer".

Yes! and that's when you first reported it BBC you cretins! When you interviewed him and plugged his new book about John McCain.

I wish he'd said "Earlier this summer, when you interviewed me and showed the footage first time around, so I don't really know what you're all going on about with this 'New and never before seen' bks".

There is little difference between your job and theirs in some ways though, save that they are not constrained by the law, the evidence and the facts (according to your client admittedly) hehe

In a similar vein to putting spin on the truth, whilst watching BBC London news this evening, they reported on a young chap who had a quad bike accident in Kos.

'It was meant to be the holiday of lifetime'

Talk about pulling at my heartstrings. He was 18, going for sex, drugs and alcohol. Fair enough a good time was to be had, but the holiday of lifetime?

'He was given a 250cc instead a 50cc quad as the 50cc quad had failed to start. Despite him pointing out he only had a provisional driving license'.

Show me one 18yr old who wouldn't take a faster quad than all his mates.

Quadriplegics aside.

I have seen not only such inaccuracy as you (and Pat H) describe but stuff which I know for a fact is complete bks and bears no relation to any real event whatsoever. I generally assume that apart from really major things like natural disasters and election results it's all bks until proven otherwise.

I made the decision circa 2 years ago never, ever to read a UK newspaper again and, in the main, I've upheld that decision - and, you know what... life's OK. I hate the UK press with a vengence. They are, to a man, scum. IMHO, like.
