But anyway, ainsley harriot on who do you think you are. I had never heard this sambo, mulatto, quadroon, octoroon business.
wiki: "In modern British English, the term "Sambo" is only used offensively[1] Formerly, it had the technical meaning of a person having a mixture of black and white ancestry, more black than white — contrast with mulatto, quadroon, octoroon etc."
I found that really interesting (in a kind of 'how riddiculous were they in those days?' kind of way).

Ainsley was quite visibly shocked when he found out his Great Grandad (or was that great great) was white. I imagine that if I was in the same circumstances I'd be blown off my feet too.
Must have been quite a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for him:
firstly finding evidence of enslaved ancestors
then the nice bit about the soldier that did well
then finding 'free' black ancestors in the police force and with property
discovering the property was bought with the proceeds of prostitution
finally finding white, slave-owning ancestors
I was always quite pleased to be a quarter Irish stock, for some vague reason I'm not sure of. My mums dad was apparently pure Irish, born and bred there, forget the towns name, but he was proud of it from the conversations I had with him in my youth.
When he died, some 15 years ago, my parents had to research his family history, as my mum wanted to go visit his home town, and his birth certificate was found, stating that he was born in Liverpool.....

I'm kind of amazed he would find that shocking. Surely a few slaves, slave masters and slave owners are going to be pretty much par for the course for anyone of West Indian descent? Most family trees have all sorts of exciting stuff like this - the odd bad apple or local hero, the surprise ancestor of another race, etc?
