As above really, looking at going somewhere in early October, flights are cheap but I've got no idea where to stay, what to see etc. Any suggestions?

Just spotted that on Google maps, looks cool smile

Is there anywhere to stay (or not to stay), I don't want to find a cheap hotel and it turn out to be really really dodgy or in the Sicilian equivalent of Toxteth or Moss Side!

Best place to stay in terms of somewhere setup for tourists is Taormina or Giardini Naxos just to the NE of Etna, although it is touristy .

Visit Etna, take the mini bus right to the top (I was evacuated from the top when bombs started flying!).

The Autostrada from Taormina to Messina is quite something. A series of bridges and tunnels along a cliffy coast.

Syracuse has some interesting ancient things to see.

Agrigento has some great temples, the road from the central autostrada south was busy but very fast and straight wink.

Finally the Aeolian islands to the North are a must, I didn't visit frown

In addition to what's already been said...

Cefalu on the north coast, east of Palermo, is worth a visit for a couple of days - stop off on the way to Taormina. Food good - great fish restaurant. Climb up the hill to the fortress and get a lovely view over the town and the beach. Church worth a visit too - even if you're not religious.

Further west I'd recommend going to Erice. High up on a hill it's a traditional town worth spending a night in. I stayed in some great, small places in the west around Trapani and Marsala. Not sure if I've still got the details but can dig them out if you're heading that way.

The plan at the moment is to fly to Trapani and hire a car for about a week but that's it at the moment. I'm used to just being able to rock up at an Ibis hotel or similar and check in in France, am I likely to find something similar there or do I need to do some digging and pre-book hotels?
