Just had my 5 yr old son asking me if 'fk Off' is a bad word - not being impressed with this at all I asked who the hell he heard saying that. Apparently it was some other older kids that were playing out the back up at my ex's house (not the best of areas that the bh lives in).

I never swear round about him, and I'm sure his mother dont either, this has kind of freaked me out though hearing him say it! Have done my best to explain to him that it is a bad word and that he does not hear me saying it and I dont expect to hear it from him either!

How do the rest of you with kids deal with this kind of stuff? Or do I just have to accept that this is life and part of growing up and there is fk all I can do about it? irked

Obviously not in the genes then.

Seriously though, why is it wrong for him when it's ok for you?

Because the OP is unlikely to be suspended from school for using foul and abusive language!

You can't stop it, it's inevitable. All you can do is control its use around the home. To be honest I'll be glad when both kids have grown up up and I can properly swear at home again!

Because he is only 5, and does not yet have the brain power to know that there is a time and a place for it?

I dont have any kids, but do have lots of nieces and nephews.
One of these nephews is 7 years old. His friend has an older brother (about 12 yrs I think). Unfortunately, the older kids see it as funny to tell their younger siblings, who then tell the pals at school.
I dont like seeing kids swear either. Kind of takes their innocence away. they grow up fast enough as it is.

Presumably, as a grown up, one can make a mature decision about when it is appropriate or not to swear and having been taught to moderate your language at a young age, you know how to speak 'properly', should circumstances require it.

If kids are brought up effing and blinding then swearing will form part of their speech and they will struggle to use a more acceptable alternative when it's required.

Although it's irresponsible to laugh at it when kids first learn to swear and really don't understand how to put the words together for maximum effect it can be very funny.

That infact reminds of few weeks ago going to the shops, overheard a decent looking and quite smart dressed woman putting shopping into her boot whilst shouting at her daughter (couldnt have been more than 5) to 'stop fking crying'. Made me cringe, have never swore in front of the wee fella. And that takes a lot of self restraint these days when out driving on the roads.

i had same with my 6 year old, heard it at school, i just told him very firmly but not in an angry way, that it was a very bad word and if I he ever said it there would be BIG trouble, havent heard it since.

We've decided not to shield our two girls from the fact that there are swear words just that there are inappropriate times to use them. Trying to stop them from hearing them is an extremely unrealistic goal but teaching them when not to use them seems much more useful a skill for them to have and they seem to have got the hang of it. They hear adults occasionally swear by accident (ahem), hear music with swear words in them and so on and they don't bat an eyelid and don't swear as far as I'm aware - I don't hear them and I've never had anyone at school complain and I suspect that they would pretty quickly. ETA: They're 4 and 6 by the way.

Gets my vote. When i was living with the ex g/f and her kids we took this approach and it certainly seemed to work.

yikes You are teaching your kids to live in the real world! Next you'll be telling me you encourage them to take pride in their apperance, and try hard at school.

Are you sure you're british? smile
