They seem to be finally admitting that immigration hasn't had the economic benefit that was claimed and causes more problems than it cures. Discuss. smile

It is not just immigration.
It is the stupid policy of multi culturalism.
So certain sorts of immigrants don't integrate into British society.
Instead they form ghettoes then demand rights that are totally alien to the British way.
Like sharia law, for instance.

We should ban all schools that are based on any one religion tomorrow. They just brainwash the next generation not to integrate.

Topic title is slightly misleading. I believe a commons committee is discussing limiting immigration so that it equals the level of emigration. Seems to have cross-party support too.

Makes perfect sense (so will undoubtedly be dismissed out of hand) as I'm not sure this country can comfortably support more people than it currently has. Won't do anything to stop Wayne and Waynetta giving birth to seventeen state supported criminals though wink

yes

It's already gone wrong. We are overpopulated. That and the dream of being "multi-cultural" hasn't worked. Yes there are multiple cultures. No they aren't always tolerant of one another.

Not really Britain's population is forecast to grow to 80 million if current immigration policies continue.

A policy of no net immigration would limit that rise substantially (particularly bearing in mind that immigrant women have a higher birth rate)

Including Church of England schools?

I'd say yes.

If they're intent on social engineering to this extent, I would have thought it would make more sense to decide on an optimal population for the country. If they keep immigration and emigration the same, the population will drop substantially because we have birth rate lower than our death rate. Maybe that's what they want, but it's an odd way to go about it.

Especially Church of England Schools.
Christianity is responsible for far more deaths, far more wars and far more terrorism than any other religion.

Easy.....collapsing curreny, + a recession, they were going to start going back to Eastern Europe anyway. No point being a Polish builder over here when all of the building work has stopped, or working in a posh coffee shop that's got no customers.

Edited to add: my real concern is on the 'out' side of the 'one in one out'...... as preventing/slowing a flight of people/capital from the UK may well be what's really worrying them. Back to the 1970's indeed.

It's too late I'm afraid. The government have already rejected this cross-party policy on sensible immigration. They know best apparently.

Immigration policy is yet another area where Labour put party advantage before the good of the country.

Is there an area where they don't?

The government can't control immigration from within Europe - this is about immigration from outside the EU. Interestingly the article says that the majority of immigration to the UK is from outside the EEA, which surprised me.

They can control immigration from the EU, they choose not to.

Well they could by leaving the EU yes, but none of the major parties are proposing that. With the current state of our economy it would be economic suicide anyway.

I find it interesting that on PH, often a hotbed of free market fundamentalism, there is so much anti-immigration feeling.

Surely that's not consistent.

Either you want

(a) the Govt to regulate everything in sight, in which case you'll happily embrace fuel price escalators, overcomplicated tax systems, massive bureacracy, mandatory state school education, 99% of GDP channeled through the public sector AND immigration controls.

or you want

(b) the Govt to leave stuff alone, in which case you'll be for low taxation, small welfare state, education vouchers, AND free migration.

How can you consider the Govt incompetent at almost everything it attempts, then happily let it decide who should be allowed into the country?

You miss the point. People want the government to do whatever is best for them, personally.
