Okay, here's the thing. I have a vacancy for a taxi driver. Mix of days evenings weekends 5 days out of 7, 4 weeks paid holiday and a take home pay of £300 for about 45 hours. I will even pay the circa £200 for the taxi badge for the right person. I have had this vacancy for about 3 months and how many applicants? 4. All of them no hopers.

Where has this country's work ethic gone? It's easy money for driving a car about in Devon.

I despair at the state of this country. Bring back Maggie.

Em, maybe the intelligent, motivated types aren't interested in driving jobs - and are already employed.

True, but I'm not looking for a brain surgeon. It's far better money for the hours than anything else around here.

'Cos £6.66ph is God awful money for dealing with the absolute scum that taxi drivers have to deal with day in day out.

Is that about average for taxi drivers? I take it they get to keep any tips?

Cheers,
Rob

Hi, i really am trying not to sound cheeky, but you are offering what works out to be a hourly rate of £6.66, for evenings and weekends, for me that isnt enough to make me give up my weekends and a few evenings during the week. Also for that rate having to deal with drunk aholes on a friday and saturday night just doesnt make it worthwhile.

Same way that the pay ethic went. Seen what it costs to buy a one-bed flat these days?

Quite, so it's not as bad as it sounds, BUT it's still only around £10/hour, for working odd hours and putting up with all sorts of aholes. I know, I've done it in my misguided youth biggrin

If I was looking for a job that paid around that i'd frankly rather stack shelves in Tesco. At least the aholes would be largely sober.

The reason you can't get staff is because the wage isn't large enough.

Sorry really amateur question here (I know nothing about the cab trade), but do you provide the car? Personally I wouldn't turn my nose up at a job like that for the money (I enjoy driving anyway), but I couldn't be dealing with some drunk throwing up all over my seats.

Okay, I'll clarify. It's after deductions. You keep all your tips which average £30 a week. You don't work every evening or every weekend. We don't do pissed up tts. You get a fully expensed mobile phone and drive around in a less than 3 year old car which is also fully expensed.

What about all the Polish!
I thought they would do all the stuff the English won't.

Maybe it's because all the people who want to drive all day are doing it as truckers on £35k plus a year

Around here min wage is paid everywhere. This is Devon, not some metropolis smile

Securicor cash guards only get £10.xx an hour and work all sorts of weird hours and have the risk of a bang on the head every day from a scrote after the money.

Fair enough, you're probablt right. I'd still rather do that than driving drunk people around Devon.

Must be miserable gits near you. I wouldn't embarrass a driver or myself with less than £1 as a tip.

The job market is distorted by the welfare state however all employers face the same issue. To attract people you need to offer a better package than they can get elsewhere.

I thought that - I'd expect £30 a day in tips
