There i was in the kitchen putting some bread (not toast) into the toaster, pressed it down and the lights in the house went out. Tv turned off and my pc did also..

Happened to anyone else? Or is my toaster inhabited by some strange power?

I sense the presence of an RCD.

Hateful devices. I suspect your toaster is close to death.

I'd far rather lose the electric for five mins than my life.

My cheapo "value" toaster trips the breakers fairly often.

Your toaster has become toast. If it has a metal case chances are some part of the element has touched to the chassis and the live 240volts is finding its way to the chassis and then onto the earth which is tripping your RCD.

For what they cost you are better binning it and buying another one.

Possible, but try the toaster in a different socket.

And i spend most of my working week telling people that the cheap electrical crap they bought from Tesco is what is tripping their RCD's, not their own belief that the wiring in their house is shot to bits. Hence my comment.

I can't afford a toaster. cry

I use up half a loaf as I keep trying to toast under the grill without starting too big a fire.

Understood - I thought you might have been placing me in the catagory of people who think RCDs are a pain and nothing else......

They ARE a pain, but I'd rather have one than not!

Slightly more alarming is that fact that one of the light switches in our living room extension is tripping the RCCB - there is a slight leak in the roof (that the fking builder was supposed to come and fix 6 weeks ago) so I can only assume the large amounts of rain are getting to the electrics eek

Got a gas hob? Great then build a 'Tenerife Toaster' as follows biggrin

  • Get a wire Coat hanger
  • Holding with the hook at the top bend it in half so that the edges which would have held your arms are nearly touching
  • Straighten the hook so you have something to hold
  • Now you can rest the bottom of coathanger on the gridle bit of the hob and place your bread on the folded over bit and Voila! a single slice toaster bowtie
Aptly named after our apartment in Tenerife didn't have one so I had to improvise laugh

Fair comment. I can live without one wink

I could make a fortune doing full inspections when in fact i can trace the problem to a faulty appliance quite easily but frankly i can't be bothered. I must be too honest biggrin

An alternative would be to push 2 wire coathangers into a mains socket and put a slice of bread inbetween - then push the coathanger together with something appropriate wink

DO NOT TRY THIS!
