Went to my local (NHS) dentist yesterday for a pre arranged check up....a small surgery that used to have, until a few months ago, two working dentists, a man downstairs, and a woman upstairs...

The woman has now left because "She never really liked dentistry, but was kind of forced into it by her parents...(dentists themselves)...she now works on the checkout at Tesco and is "much happier"....

Anyhows,....This means the man downstairs has overnight got double the workload.....They have advertised for a replacement for three months without a single reply......

The receptionist told me NHS direct say there is nearly a three year waiting list for NHS dentists in my area, and the local authority have been bringing newly qualified dentists from Hungary over to Lancashire, advising them to go over to Hungary for treatment.....

She also said the situation was just as dire in the private sector too, with a great shortage of dentists coming into the profession and long waiting lists....

Whilst I was in the waiting room two patients rang up saying they had very severe toothache, but she told them they could not be seen for at least three days at best...

What's going on??...scratchchin

3 year waiting list sounds pretty good to me.
Round here, any talk of an NHS dentist having places starts a riot with the bib being called to control proceedings.

Dentists are in high demand, and can make far more doing private work. Why WOULD they do NHS stuff...?

Try you local bouncy castle...

Remember how, 11 years ago, Tony Blair kept telling us that we had only '24 hours to save the NHS'?

Back then, doctors used to make house calls and it was still possible to find a dentist who hadn't gone private.

Billions of pounds later, thousands of patients are either reduced to pulling out their own teeth or going abroad for treatment.

Now an enterprising Hungarian company has spotted a gap in the market. To save British patients having to fly to Budapest for their root canal work, they're setting up an inflatable dental surgery over here

It will travel round the country offering half-price treatment.

It's come to this. After more than a decade of Labour 'investment', your best chance of getting your teeth filled is queuing up to see a Hungarian operating out of a bouncy castle. Makes you proud to be British..

I understand that, but there is a shortage of private dentists too, at least in my area......

Think yourself lucky, at least you have a dentist. We have no chance, here, ony of my neighbours had to pay £100+ to get their 10 year old cured of severe toothache.

I use these peeps.

http://www.oasisdentalcare.co.uk/

I registered for NHS treatment, and was seen within 4 weeks of registering with them.

I was seen by a nice Polish lady, who pronouced all was fine (despite not going to the dentist for 14 years).

Total bill including consultation & x-rays - £12 all in.

Recent figures suggest that NHS dentists earn more than private.

I have just advertised for a new associate and had about 15 applicants, so no shortage of dentists. Maybe a shortage of jobs though. Our waiting list is 9 months and we have a empty surgery unused. PCT won't let us employ another dentist so patients have to wait.

I knew a guy at school who's only ambition was to be a dentist.
Weird ambition to have at that young age....

Everyone in the know goes to eastern Europe now.
Better trained and far better equipped dentists using the latest techniques.
Cheaper, no waiting lists.
Ryanair over for the day for pennies (if booked well in advance).
Or stop over and do the tourist thing.

Sorted.

I have to pay a minimum of £16 something and that is just for a check up! Goes up to £40 something if it includes an x-ray and mine is NHS.irked
