Britain is well placed to weather the "first financial crisis of the new global age" thanks to Labour's handling of the economy
Funny how Britain is the only G7 nation tat the OECD have predicted will enter recession this year...Edited by jesusbuiltmycar on Thursday 4th September 16:19

"Gordon is simply not in touch with reality. He has just told a business crowd that this is the "first financial crisis of the new global age".
So the technology stock crash in 2000/1 was not worldwide? Didn't the 1997/8 Asian economic crisis and LTCM collapse have global repercussions, the ERM crisis in 1992 had currency volatility everywhere, Black Monday in 1987 was scary, the Latin American debt crisis in 80s... we have had them all the way back to 1929. All were global financial crises.
Gordon says the economy has "underlying strength", which must be why August saw the lowest new car sales since Bobby Charlton lifted the World Cup. Oh, almost forgot: the Prime Mentalist is getting on with the job and making long term decisions as well."

Funny how Brown claims we are well placed to weather the storm thanks to low interest rates.
What he fails to admit is that interest rates in the UK are significantly higher than the US, all Eurozone countries and Japan.
Brown is a bell end of the highest order.

Didn't OECD say we'll be the only major industrialised nation to be in recession by the end of the year? Whoever it was they can't be talking about two successive quarters of negative growth, it must be growth dipping below the line at some point.
You're generous with your view of Gordon Clown - he's worse than that

After today's pantomime at the Bank of England, I think whatever happens from here on in, Merv' King and his crew can share some of the s
t with Brown.
Not quite sure what they get up to there in Threadneedle Street, but it isn't reading the business pages of the broadsheets (where the MPC have been openly criticised for sitting on their hands) of the majority of businesses I speak to. Granted, not every firm is tanking, but then just wait to see how many survive Q1 2009, and in the meantime unemployment and repo' rates continue to climb...
Come to think of it, I'd like a job on the MPC:
hold at 5%,
hold at 5%,
hold at 5%,
hold at 5% ... Repeat until economy stagflates then panic.

The English Pound has weakened against Japanese Yen by 9% in less than a month and lost 12% of its value to the US$ over a six week period. I don't know where he's getting these 'we'll weather the storm' ideas from? Cloud cuckoo land?
The Chancellor of the Exchequer didn't exactly do much for the strength of sterling with his ill-judged comments last week. You're forgetting that all these guys who are in charge of the country and supposed to be averting the recession (which is here) have no idea about Economics or business and are absolutely useless on anything to do with the matter. There's not much the tories could do either - it's really just a case of cycles and letting the markets sort themselves out; it's always the best way.

Well, yes, but that misses the point slightly. Had MacBroon demonstrated a tad more prudence in the past few years the situation would be a lot better.Edited by g4ry13 on Thursday 4th September 18:07

Which brings us back to the point that these guys know nothing about economics and markets. Brown is a PhD historian - although admittedly he probably had little say in the policy and left it up to the economists who don't see the light of day.DucatiGary said:

Highly inflationary, and will hide the benefits of falling oil prices. So should they raise interest rates now to strengthen the pound or do it later to combat galloping inflation?Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
