After so many years of a socialist government we need a dictatorship for a while to dismantle the massive mistakes.

A normal democratic government will take too long to get the UK back to operating normally.

Excuse me sir what about this 1 billion pound NHS supercomputer network.

Dictator-cut it, get all those IT guys out on a fire drill then just send them all home.

And what about the NHS?

Dictator- anyone involved with target setting or middle management, fire drill-11am.

These ID cards Sir,

Dictator. No-fire drill, the lot of them. send em all home.

But they will all be unemployed Sir,

Dictator, fine, give themn a safety net for a month or two then if they want to keep getting paid they can work for the government 3 or 4 days a week for their dosh, otherwise, no money.

What about the tax office sir, we need to generate a bit more cash.

Dictator, all taxes are 20%, for everyone, you start paying on anything over 12 grand a year. no credits etc, get anyone involved in that stuff out on a fire drill and give them a black plastic bag with the contents of their desk in it.

What about speed cameras sir?

Put a sign half a mile before every single speed camera in the country telling the driver it is coming up. Don't put any more up and make sure there are 5 times as many trafpol on the roads by next tuesday.

What about traffic wardens sir,

fire drill, the lot of them and send all those plastic coppers home while you're at it.

You see, within a couple of days one could sort out a load of the terrible mess that this ridiculous bloated government has put in place over the last 10 years, any further suggestions for the dictators first day in office?

No we just need a reformed electoral system where every vote counts towards the make up of the house of commons, in order to have democratic majority rule, as opposed to minority rule.

As has been said before, bring back Maggie Thatcher! A dictatorship that still falls within our constitution!

We need to make it compulsary to vote, instead of governments being elected on a turn out of less than half the populace, which give active minorities disproportionate sway.

And on the same theme stop students having votes in 2 constituencies.

Error. Why would a dictator care about speed cameras? They'd be fire drilled too!

Dictatorships are great, if you're one of the people who agrees with the dictator....

They tend to be a bit tough on everybody else though...

Hitler? Pinochet? Stalin? Franco? Mugabe? Musharaf? Amin? Hussein? Pol Pot?

See a bit of a flaw in your plan yet?

They don't, except in local elections. In any case, even if tehy did, how many students do you think would make the effort?

ozzie-please put on your hiviz vest in preparation for 11am.

Admittedly dictatorships may start to go a bit pear shaped after a couple of years but those first two years, pure gold.

So basically you want a leader who you don't vote for to be in charge and who does what he wants without having to justify it to the public. Erm, I think your wish may have been granted a little while back.

You mean like Italy had for decades which meant they never had a government and complete political instability? A few years ago they changed to the British 'first past the post' system and have had far more stable govt since.

No I mean like the French system.

Italys problems are far more complex than you think, but then your comments seem to spring more from ignornace and prejudice than a detailed understanding of Italian politics or history.

Like Tony Blair you mean?

Dictators aren't all they are cracked up to be. We had one once (an official one), Oliver Cromwell, a phsycopathic, indoctrinated, butchering, zealot for whom we are still paying for.

Monarchies, prior to that we generally pretty shocking on average.

Trust me, as much as the idea sounds great, we'd always find ourselves on the wrong side biggrin

Sadly, an elected Government is what is required but not one that is full of hate-filled, scared and ignorant little men.

Find me a sensible government and I'll show my acensorede in Woolies window!

The trouble with two-party politics is that, inevetably, once the current ruling party has fudged things up properly, the opposition will 'walk' into power fairly easily, irrespective of their actual suitability to govern.

Aldous Huxley riased this topic in Brave New World where one of the characters, Everard Webley, the head of a fascist movement, spoke about democracy being a "tyranny of the masses". You have to admit, somewhere in there is a worryingly real argument; how do we justify the fact that a highly productive and intelligent human being is given no more say in the way things are run than someone who choses neither to work or perform any constructive role in society?
