Hello

Could anyone give recommendations on decent areas to live within reasonable (circa 30min?) commuting distance (train?) of central london? Ideally somewhere as rural as possible (I appreciate that this isn't highly likely being that close to London), while having decent public transport links, and not costing the earth to rent a smallish house. Is this even possible?

Thanks

Have a look at Chelmsford. 34mins to Liverpool Street, and pretty good prices. Also open countryside is at your doorstep...

Which bit of "central" London are you looking at commuting into?

That will dictate which direction you should be looking at.

Buy an A to Z and a Pair of Compasses. Not sure why they are called a pair of compasses when you only get one but there you go!

Which bit of C London? Which is the nearest overland train station to where you will be working?

Surprisingly, it is a big place & C London can be accessed from many directions within 30 minutes, but not each place will get you to the same place in C London in 30 mins. If I make sense!

You really need to know what part of London you want to get to and where you are coming in from.

West? Paddington station and First Great Western are truly st. Completely useless tossers in the extreme. I moved house to a different area so that I did not have to commute with them anymore. They run a rancid, putrid, cesspit of a business with no regard for the commuter whatsover. Avoid. Oh, and they rob you in the process too - ticket prices are a sick joke.

South / South West - South West Trains into Waterloo. My preferred option. Works pretty well and the commute is just about bareable.

North West - try Marylebone - which goes out toward Bucks and Aylesbury etc. Apparently that is pretty good and Marylebone is a nice station on most of the tube lines.

East and the City, or Docklands - Anywhere in Essex going into Liverpool Street.

Take your pick !

Thanks to the unwarranted stigma surrounding the word "Essex", the County does offer very good value in terms of property compared to similar Sussex, Herts, Bucks, Surrey, Kent towns, etc.

As mentioned, Chelmsford is good (fast becoming a very cool town!).

Have a look at http://www.churchandhawes.co.uk/

you'll struggle to keep it within 30 mins. If you could manage 45 mins you open up a few possibilties. Lots of Kent towns/villages within 45 mins of Victoria/Charing Cross/London Bridge.

If in the square mile then Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Theydon Bois and Epping (where I live) are all 25-35 mins on the central Line.

Avoid Debden though.

Bromley is 20-25 minutes from Victoria and has a very good train service, plenty of nice little areas around it too.

Maybe the council tax savings could offset your commute!

This man speaks the truth - lovely countryside and 30 mins on the Tube into C London - not even train... best of both worlds

Watford works well if Euston works for you. I'm a mile and a bit from the junction (Euston 18 mins) ,and a bit less to open country. Boxmoor is nice but still part of hemel hempstaead, Berkhamptead is very nice but expensive.

St albans if you prefer Charring cross.
