...and replace with 3% local income tax.

Can't see a thread on this?

I say, bring it on. It's not a tax on dividends, now is it? scratchchin My contributions sustaining the local breeding chavs will be wiped out at a stroke silly

Got to hope not. If not - I hope they introduce it HERE!

I thought it was quite a good idea, except 3% seems a bit steep to me. Not maybe for high earners but for low earners it could add to their tax bill by a third.

It's just a re-hash of the LiDems policy isn't it of a local imcome tax isn't it?

3%? Around here that would be a massive increase in council revenues. 1% would be more like it.

I think it's a great idea!

SNP = cloud9

after all, the layabout jobshy pricks get council tax exemption anyway, and this system would be fairer IMO smile

Isn't income tax very expensive to collect?

IIRC the SNP have been found out on this one, it won't work as the current figures show there would be a massive black hole, finance secretary John Swinney himself admitted there was a £700 million deficit which would need to be looked at! It sounds like a good idea but the sums don't add up.

No, employers are made to do it via PAYE....it's all the other indirect taxes that cost alot to collect IIRC.

But with income tax there are a hundred and one allowances, credits and the like. If you start adding those sort of things don't you need lots of people to work it out?

Why should high earners pay more council tax? Earning more money doesn't mean you use the police, fire, bins etc more.

Flat rate per person, means tested against benefits. That would be fair.

Not really. Only the same as other taxes - like VAT.

The only problem with income tax is that only a few people pay it. For example - people, like me, who's main source of cash is the distribution of profits made by Companies in which I own shares - don't pay that much "Income tax" (I pay other taxes that amount to the equivalent but it is still less that it would be if it was "income).

There are also a great many dependents and so on who pay no income tax but still consume council service resources.

Then there's those on benefits etc

A fairer (and more straightforward to collect) system would be local VAT. It's hard to avoid - and you can tweak it by zero-rating (or lower rating) essentials like food and heat which benefits the poor/pensioners and so on.

Another upside is that those who pay no income tax because, ahem, they are non-contributers to society still pay it - as everything they buy is taxed instead.
