Engagement Ring
Discussion
Hi all,
I have done a fair bit of reading of older topics on the above subject and have a fairly detailed understanding to colour clarity size etc, and i have spoke to a few dealers here (in dubai) i just wanted to know how the price compares and is there anywhere cheaper (not that money should ever come in the way of true love
but i have to think about the ferrari fund!!!
the diamond i am looking at is 1.1 K G colour with si1 the cut is very good price is around 2900 gbp
any thoughts??? wheres the lord????
Cheers Rick

First off, i'm taking it that, as per custom out there, that the diamond is sealed in a little packet with its grading report, and the grading report has been issued by HRD or GIA?
My personal oppinion is if I was buying a SI graded diamond, i would want to see it. SI grading is at the point where the inclusions can be sometimes be seen with the naked eye, depending on the type of inclusion. for instance, it could be a single large inclusion thats visable, or it could be a dense cloud of inclusions that dull the stone.. or the inculsions could be lots of little inclusions that cant be seen unless using a loupe - you just dont know till it comes out the little packet.
The other thing, while its a G SI1 - what's the floresance grading? that is - all natural diamonds glow blue under UV light... but some more than others, and are graded from none or negliable...through faint to strong.
What happens is that when you have a diamond with a bit of Floresance, and the diamond has a low colour grade of say I or J, the yellow of the stone is balence by the blue of the flor.. making the diamond appear whiter... but on the other hand flor can cause the diamond to look milky in sun light.
The things i'd need to know really at things like the Table size, the physical measurements so we can take a guess at how well cut the stone ie, and the depth.
Going off previous experiance - because of the sealed diamond thing in Dubai, and elsewhere in the region, the diamond cutters tend to send the better cut stones, to America, while those that arent as well cut, but have a good grading report go to Dubai, for a good price.
For instance - those i've seen that have been bought in Dubai have had large tables, and have been cut deeper - to make the stone heavier, and hence worth more. But actually looks in the ring smaller than a lighter stone that weighs more.

Low clarity rating - for a ring as special as an engagement ring I think you should be heading for VVS1 (VVS2 at worst).
ETA - for the same price!
why pay so much more for something you can't see?ETA - for the same price!

there is no visible difference between If (internally flawless) VVS 1 & 2 (very very slightly included) VS 1 & 2 (very slightly included) when the diamond is set in a ring, and your just using your eyes.
SI is a little different - in that in somecases the inclusions are visible, and in other they arent.
every natural diamond in the world is included, its just how much magnification is needed to see it.
Diamonds are graded for clarity under 10x magnification, in special lighting. to highlight the inclusions. but use a more powerful magnifier and look at things under the 63x magnification and you may well see inclusions within an IF diamond.
PS - to teh OP the price of £2900 - does that include the tax (17.5% + 2.5% import duty) on returning to the UK (unless your living out there?)
if not that your looking north of £3400 for the diamond. Which puts it close to that of the US diamonds.
if you compare yours to this one: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/4675/
the incusion is in the main picture under the black arrow shaft at the 6 o clock position.
Hmm
AED 21,000 for a 1.1 carat? Seems a lot...
One of the joys of this city is that you can look at a lot of stones, and actually begin to build up a picture of what the differences are. Go into several good jewellers, learn to use a loupe, ask lots of questions and take your time. I've spent long, happy hours sitting at the counter of my favourite jeweller, opening little paper packets of unset stones, looking at each, discussing what we can see, choosing the best match, asking him to find some more of a better colour, choosing our favourites, looking at fancy colours, pink sapphires, alexandrite, black diamonds, all kinds of fascinating stuff. Where else have you ever held a held a 10 carat flawless stone in your (tweezered) hand?
I doubt there are many places in this world where you can have such unfettered access to stones of such sheer variety (there is a LOT of cheap, low grade, badly cut stuff around) but learn your hearts and arrows, table sizes and angles and you will have a ball.

Wow, thanks so much for that i have spoke to a few more dealers and am looking at various options, there is so much to take in after a few phone calls i have managed to get the prices down a fair bit, i live out here so v.a.t and import taxes aren't a issue (thank god) best deal i got is a vs2 with h colour with good cut for 19,200 (2700 gbp) it has a very good cut and comes with a certificate, and report i cant remember the exact initials of the institute but i believe it was 3 letters and there was a list of countries the first being antwerp and mumbai also being listed. i basically want t get a good balance between size and clarity / colour but i understand the sparkle is the key component.
Thanks for the quick response

Thanks Jon,
Do you have a particular place you would recommend as like you say the variety is vast, i must of spent hours and hours wandering the gold and diamond park, and the difference from one shop to the next is vast, but like yu say the people working there tend to give you lots of time and explanation which is great, by the way, how long in Dubai??
Cheers

the very good cut - is that the dealers discription? or on the report? Thanks for the quick response
Rick
I'm guessing that the report is from HRD or GIA with the Very Good cut grade (as thats one of their grading reports duiscriptions)
i'd say, if your going to be buying out there.
then get one of these: http://www.ideal-scope.com/cart_zoom_item.asp?Id=2...
and use that when assessing the diamonds - and compare how the diamonds look to the claibration CZ stone you get with the scope.
Stick in the range of VS and above for clarity, and H and above in colour.
then when looking at the reports - if its a HRD report, then it will mention the table size and the physical diamensions of the stone, and the % proportion of the crown and pavilion. ideally i want to know the depth.. and preferable the crown and paviailon angles, but only GIA and the AGS (and you probly wont find AGS graded stones in Dubai) provide the angles.
compare the width of the diamonds your looking at to this chart:

if the diamond your looking at hasa smaller width than shown here, then your paying for weight in the diamond you cant see.
For instance, a 1ct stone should ideally be about 6.4-6.5mm in dia. but if its cut too deep, to retain weight, then it may be more 6.2-6.3mm and look the same size as a ideally cut 0.9-0.95ct stone... (which would be cheaper than a 1ct stone due to the way diamonds are price on a 'per carat price)
i'd say, if your going to be buying out there.

I might be way off target here but...............
you're never going to trade it in and realise the value of the asset,
so, buy either the biggest you can, if size is important; or the clearest if size isn't.
grading is largely for the trade of diamonds and has nothing to affect you once the thing is bought.
it's like buying a TV: you won't have 2 TVs next to each other to compare, so buy one from a reputable dealer and if it's inches you want, then pay for inches.
choice defeats you.

well i chose a top cape grade K. for the warmth of the stone. i dont like white white diamonds.
but i got a stone of 6.1mm decent depth very sparkly with a cert VSset in plat.
bit more diamond for our money in a colour we like.
Julian's ring is still in the making. designer 24ct gold inside plat outside with a princess cut .08ct diamond inset colour K VS1.
its a choice thing after all.
