Finally got my act together (well, Mrs Mastiff did!)and am off to Dubai in early October for a week. Just the two of us and no kids! As usual, I turn to the well travelled PH community for some info on the "must do" things in what sounds like an extraordinary place.

We are staying at Jebel Ali Palm Tree Cort and Spa (something like that anyway), which I think is a little outside the City itself. Cabs/local travel are not a problem.

Current top of the list is a drink in the Burg Al Jarab (sp) of course, but I know that loads of you have spent time/live/work here so any unusual or interesting suggestions would be appreciated. Good dining advice as well please!!!

Thanks in advance.

My sister lives out there, so I have visited a couple of times - definitely go to the Dubai Autodrome, they have a massive karting circuit. Not sure how many metres it is, but bearing in mind the biggest kart circuit in Europe - Cypros (apparently) is 1400 metres & the single engined 6.5 bhp karts were lapping at around 54 secs (with me on board), I was lapping 1m 18's in Dubai in similar spec karts! biggest kart circuit I've seen by far.

Apart from that they have a decent water park (Wild Woody?), that's well worth a visit + it's nice to spend an evening next to the water park - forget what it's called now but basically some shops & restaurants surrounded my some wind towers, where the ambience is quite nice.

Mainly it's shopping/shopping/shopping, as they have numerous shopping centres. The only one that's worth going to imo is the huge one next to the main highway which has a massive indoor ski slope attached to the side, which you can see through a huge glass wall from the restaurants area, big snow machines, the whole works - amazing.

If you like haggling, then it's worth visting the old town. Again, forget what it's called now, but there are lots of cheap clothes stalls etc (careful where you eat around there!).

If you have access to a car, then worth visiting Hata -which is quite a drive (2 hours?). They have a historic village there. On the way to Hata, you'll pass 'Big Red' which is bascially a big red desert where you can have a camel ride, go 4x4'ing on the sand dunes or hire a quad bike (pay extra for the 2-stroke 350 Banshee like I did - 6 speed manual, mental biggrin )

From what I understand from a friend who is out there, they are nearing the end of the construction of the floors and top of the tower for the Burj. Its incredibly impressive and a sight in itself. I am not sure if you can get access to any part of it yet though. Might be worth checking....

Abra ride to Deira, the old town, is a must do, gold souk is OK, spice souk is small but I thought great.

Best go kart track I have ever been on out at the Autodrome, possibility to drive the Autodrome in a variety of cars, I had 20mins in a single seater for around 120 pounds.

Dune Buggy driving out in the desert, picked in Dubai, taken out into the desert and over three hours hooning around and not expensive. Quad bikes were not such a success, too many people driving across the path of others, felt unsafe.

Wild Wadi water park is good.

Indoor sking/snowboarding is good

Eating and drinking far too much is pretty good.

Shopping and more shopping - some excellent deals on diamonds, best if you can get a resident to help with that, my duaghter got us some good deals, valuation in UK 3x what we paid for a couple of rings for MrsT.

The hop on hop off bus round Deira is good, the museum is also very good, it is at one of the stops.

Loads more i have forgotten.

Out of interest is the arrive and drive done as races or is it just practice?
I might give it a go when I'm out there visiting my relatives

i know everyone says shopping but i havent found it that cheap at all a louis vuitton wallet worked out £15 cheaper than the uk, some of the rolex's are more than the uk, the only real bargains i found was tiffany in saks was actually cheap.

just imagine after all that if you get court in customs and have to pay duty it will all work out so so much more

on the other hand tgi's at the mall of emirates worked out to £20 for what in the uk would usually be £40 so was cheap.

well worth a drink in the al muntaha at the top of the burj al arab also there afternoon tea is worth it to impress.

the burj dubai is well well worth a look get a cab to stop to get some pics its just unreal

if your into boats a taxi up to the marina is worth it for a walk about.

we have only ever stayed in the jumeriah beach hotel which we was really really impressed

Is it me or does a "I'm going to Dubai what's there to do" thread come up on here every 72 hours?

I'd go wadi driving or somesuch out in the desert.

No offense meant OP. It's just sometimes it feel like Groundhog Day.

Mate, it's always worth asking, I found some really good places in Malta that I would not have found had I not asked here. After all, it's what this t'interweb thing is for isn't it?

I did have a quick search, but couldn't find anything useful. My apologies for boring you though. smilebeer

Arrive & drive sessions of 15-20 mins, so not races as such...
