£50-60 if you go and weigh it in yourself, and that's pushing it!

It's always easy to say this after the event but I missed the post earlier.

Anyway you should have hung onto into till end of Sept early Oct', scrap prices have bombed in the last six weeks while new material prices have continued to climb, the reason being that all bar one of the mills in Europe go onto a summer shutdown, the scrappies stock pile it until they re open again but drop the buy in prices as they really don't want it right now. Prices will go back up (like double) when the mills get back upto speed and the backlog clears down.

scrap price is around £400/ton so a scrap yard will pay you around £200/ton. at least thats what i got last week. that stuff about steel mills shutting down is nonsense smile

also scrapped a car today, got £90 for a complete knacker - not bad i thought

yep complete and absolute nonsense, the average of 4-5 tonnes of steel and a tonne each of ali' and st/st that I scrap each month means that I know fook all about what i'm talking about, prices will not be going back up again late next month and are currently at an all time high, go weigh it in right now. rolleyes

Early last month I was getting £380/ tonne for iron last week the rate was £260 I actually get
my weekly fax on a thursday for Friday collection but am expecting low 200's this week, currently sitting on circa 8 tonnes. Its always the same in the third quarter, every year.

You can't say that! He's a design engineer, and knows much of which he speaks. 7 tonnes a month? What do you know?

This is one post i'm actualy qualified to reply to. If you're ally was clean ie free of steel you should have got circa £700 per tonne (70p per kilo) that is what we are paying today. The august shut down story is very true and steel prices have plummeted over the last 5-6 weeks.as for mel getting £360 per tonne for his 5 or so tonnes hmmm i can't see it. We send out over 1000 tonnes weekly and even at the peak in june it was not even close to that.
Hope this helps
Martin

i didn't say your prices were nonsense mel. i was saying that the eu steel mills shutting down thing was nonsense. they aren't.

8t may seem like much to you but where i work we produce over 70,000t a week.

even getting £200/t for a load of radiators i threw out was a good deal for me. £80 for complete junk, yet paid for a good night out smile

For those gents in the industry fom a gent whose work life is driven largely by metal pricing and attempting to prevent the huge costs it's impact is having on our business, can I ask you a question ?

When we scrap, through authorised sites, such as EMR and Simms why is it that EMR is always able to offer a significantly higher price for stainless steel than the others ?

Economics suggest it should drive there to be a single price otherwise there 'cash on the table' for the other 2 suppliers ?

I did some consultancy work for a firm which provided haulage for scrap metal to the docks. Most of the steel destined for Europe was going to Italy and the receiving yards over there certainly were closed in August. The entire industrial/factory side of Italy closes for August - you've got as much chance of them taking a shipment of scrap steel as you have of getting a nice new leather sofa.

EMR is a very ruthless company when it comes to pricing e3specialy for steel. I think they have to be to make up for the piss poor service they provide. We have picked up some major clients over the years from emr because they keep the customer waiting for ever when it comes to bin collections, Also there seems to be no personal aproach. It's strange that you mention they are better on price for stainless steel as i know who they sell to as i sell to the same people.
I find i can usualy do better than them on most non ferrous prices.are sims quoting like for like ie 316ss compared to 18/8??
