I got one of those new fangled i-pod shuffle things a month or so ago.

I can fill it up with MP3's but it doesn't play anything.

The instructions don't really help either.

I feel old.

Help.

Spent about an hour trying this myself, for the mrs' new ipod. 3 rows later, and if the thing survives the weekend, I'll have to get one of the geeks in the office to do it on Monday. I mean, all the brains in the world, and this is the easiest to use thing they can come up with?!

Right, where's me slippers?

Once you have added the tunes, wait till it finishes syncing then use the icon to disconnect from i-tunes.

Sometimes if you just take it off the docking station, it locks the ipod shuffle.

When you switch it on what lights do you have on it..?

Also it can take about 6 hours for the first charge.

Never done it that way, as soon as I plugged mine in, I-tunes opened. Try it...that may get it to work.

Get i-tunes via quicktime.

I don't think a shuffle can take anything but Itunes files, thats why you have not music playing.

Yes you are old.

Nope, you have to convert the mp3's into some sort of iTunes recipe, then load them on the Ipod with the iTunes tool.

No danger they could make something that is so simple, actually simple, is there. rage

RTFM, ffs.

That's not how an iPod works.

If you're struggling with this, I suggest you take your computer back to where you bought it from for a refund on the grounds that you're too stupid to own a computer.

Overly harsh, imo. You certainly CAN use Nanos and regular iPods that way.

Very nice, I must say.

There are some real knobs on PH nowadays.

Ignoring the tangled web of insults and advice, here's what you need to do:

Get iTunes from here - you don't need to fart about with the ticky boxes or giving them your email address.

Then, when you've installed it, get your music into iTunes by using the File->Add To Library function. This won't alter your files, it'll just give iTunes sight of them.

Now plug in your Shuffle. iTunes will detect it and set it up.

Hope this helps. PM me if you're really up the chute.

Not unless you install another OS on the iPod first. Out of the box, the only way to get music onto an iPod is to use iTunes.

1. Download iTunes
2. Install iTunes
3. Import music files
4. Plug in iPod

Damn Apple for making things needlessly complex and difficult.

typical geek response. How about swapping jobs and seeing which really is the complicated and intellectually challenging one to perform. In my work (defense technology) and my wife's for that matter (in the NHS) I've had to use some intergalacticly stupid applications that obviously made sense to the idiot writers that are cretinous in the real world and waste time, money and resources. When they actually make applications that engender respect from users I'll respect their oinion. As for the original question. IpoD's could be made to work like a pen drive but no, you have to use Itunes so you're tempted to spend more money in their shop. It also limits file sharing and forces Ipod pairing restrictions. There are ways round but again they've come up with something that wastes time, money and resources and congratulate themselves. end of rant!
