I really can't understand the fascination to have one first.

I want to get mine upgraded, it will be the same phone in a few weeks with the added bonus that the bugs will be worked out

I partially agree with you, I purchased one about 5 months after they came out after using it compared to other PDA phones because it is the most stable, easy to use tool to run my businesses out on the road (which is often the case)

It saves me from carrying a laptop, and is useful for google maps when I am out on the road without satnav.

Even after owning one for nearly a yeasr, I still can't understand the need to have one right now "because its an iphone"

Right now its very good, and I like the thing - but I am sure the other manufacturers will make something better soon.

+1

There are SO many phones out there that can do the same job, and more... better.

Dont get me wrong, I am an Apple fan, I have an iMac, a Macbook, iPod and i DID have an iPhone. Fast forward to now, and the HTC products (yes they are Windows based, so perhaps the UI is not as good) but what an excellent piece of kit. Better camera, better battery life, the list is endless to be quite honest.

Yes the iPhone looks the DB's and the GUI is second to none, but from what I have read about the 3g iPhone, it's STILL not the wonder tool it is meant to be.

But quite simply there aren't. That is the point.

My TyTN II does everything the iPhone does (and more as far as I can work out), got it for free on contract, didn't have to queue, and they were 3G when they came out 6 months ago!

You will never get those 4 hours of your life back!

Reminds me of that old sniffpetrol ad, some people would buy a dog turd if it had an Apple logo on it and was labeled "iTurd"!

Sweeping statement. Untrue. I'm an Apple fanboy but the iPhone is a compromise on everything. Yes the touch-screen is gee qhiz if you want to spend the whole day fiddling around on the internet. I've used an iPhone and, in my experience, it ain't a patch on my N95.

'ti true.

Usability. Design. Reliability. Responsiveness. These are of paramount importance to me in a phone.

The iPhone is still years ahead of the competition in these areas and that's what counts.

TyTN II - uses Windows mobile. Unreliable, un-intrusive, buggy, unresponsive and plain hateful OS.
N95 - clunky, poorly designed, pathetic battery life, clumsy OS and limited interface.

Of course, we may not agreewink

I might agree if you had not had used the N95 as an example.

Went through 3 of them, first one kept crashing, needed rebooting 3 or 4 times a day and would hang when making calls

Second one refused to take an install of any genuine satnav software, and the GPS was rubbish, kept dropping out

Third one actually worked a lot better but kept crashing about once a day, unacceptable.

Vodafone and I came to an agreement that we annul the contract at this point - thats when I got the iphone. In all fairness it has crashed. Twice. In nearly a year. That I can tolorate.

I'm no Windows apologist but I've found it very stable. I've had reason to reset the phone 3 or 4 times in 6 months and it hasn't crashed once - it's always been from rogue applications stopping working. Hardly Windows' fault.

Unresponsive? Well, the video update can be slow at times but that's purely due to HTC's unwillingness to release proper video drivers. Having said that, it's only when doing things like going from portrait to landscape mode.

I am a "real world" user - when out and about using SMS, camera, phone, email, web browsing, GPS, MP3 player, playing games, etc. and it does the lot pretty much faultlessly.

And the TyTN2's trump card? It has a qwerty keyboard! Can't believe I used to faff around with a stylus or predictive text when writing emails!

It's not perfect, but sounds like the iPhone isn't eitherwink

OK, for me the features of the phone are quite important too...

Can you take a picture on the phone and quickly send it over to someone else who is out on the road (email aside?). Would that picture be of decent quality at all? Answer is no.

The email functionality is complete crap also, i wonder if you can now delete lots of emails at the same time instead of individually.

There's lots of flaws on the phone that quite simply would not be acceptable should the likes of Nokia release it.

iphone is a typical Apple product - a triumph of slick interface over actual ability. I really liked it when i tried it, but it couldn't do what I needed it to, so TYTN II it was. No regrets after 6 months.

I have also found Windows Mobile 6.1 a joy to use...

I have had an iPhone as well, used it for the best part of 8 months. I quite enjoy being able to listen to the radio on the way to work too.

OK. Specifically? Clearly the iPhone is a smart phone (ie mini micro computer). So those of us buying iPhone's and N95's etc (I have the 8GB version which is utterly stable) are clearly interested in more than the ability to just use it as a phone for voice calls.

"Years ahead?" Let's take a look:

As a camera device the iPhone has a 2MP snapper. LG, Samsung and Sony E are all about to launch 8MP models.

Video. On its highest resolution setting an N95 8GB can take video indistinguishable from a dedictated non-HD camcorder. The iPhone has no video capability at all. Not even Flash (a rather glaring omission for something touted as an internet browsing device).

Battery life? Unknown. It's not user-replaceable so no chance of swapping in a spare battery if you're away from a power source for too long.

3G phones have been available for five years. The 3G iPhone was launched on Friday.

Push email - the Blackberry cracked that years ago.

GPS? Done a year ago by Nokia

iPod in a phone - see Sony Ericsson Walkman phones.

Look. The iPhone is undoubtedly a snazzy and desirable gizmo. It has an attractive and cutesy interface and is no doubt a great little gadget. But it has its shortcomings like any other mobile device that tries to be a jack of all trades and master of none. It's a compromise. Take away the wondrous interface and it's a fairly average unit. Its virtual keyboard is exasperating in the extreme to anyone who has fingers fatter than a 6-month-old baby. It's SMS interface is convoluted. There are still unanswered questions about its battery life when using the GPS an iPod functions (not much point listening to music for a couple of hours when there's no power left to make or receive calls. And while everyone is going ga ga that it finally has 3G capabilities, how many of the early adaptors will get "bill shock" when they see the cost of sending and receiving all that lovely new 3G data (watching YouTube, downloading iTunes and apps from the App Store etc).

Would I like a new 3G iPhone? Honestly no. And I speak of someone who was given an iPhone through work which now languishes in a top drawer being used occasionally as a spare iPod. I found the touch-screen and virtual keyboard imprecise and annoying after a short while.

If this thing had been made by Samsung it wouldn't merit a single paragraph in the press.

The iPhone is a Steve Jobs master-class in brand and media manipulation. He should run for President.

(NB: this has been typed In My Humble Opinion on an Apple MacBook )

(NNB: to anyone cursing the N95. The 8GB version running the latest firmware is as solid as a rock with four or five day battery life. Honestly).

If I may use a car analogy, my TVR does everything I want in a car really well. It handles, performs, gives driver involvement and feedback, is interesting and unusual.

It doesn't have some things other cars have had for years, but I care not as they aren't important.

Everyone else thinks I'm mad as it costs more and does 'less' than other cars.

Somehow I just love it and just don't care and will defend it no-matter what...

scratchchin sound familiar? silly

Anyone who thinks the iphone is top tech is really kidding themselves, or is buying into the hype.

Nice UI on a device, apart from that its nothing special. The sad thing is the 3G version is what the first version ought to have been. 2MP camera, come on...

More pathetic than the Mac fanboys are the N95/HTC fanboys that keep prattling on about the low technology of the iPhone, it really is tiresome.
