We need to get a, well not sure if you'd call it a safe or a secure cabinet, but something to store media in that will withstand fire and break-in attempts from someone who probably isn't totally determined to break into it.

Googling turns up myriad manufacturers and of course to a layman they all seem to tick the right boxes.

So starter for 10, Secureline Secure Data Office, Phoenix Data Commander and Rosengrens Polaris?

If this is for insurance purposes it is worth asking your insurance company/broker and they will point you to one.

If the media is digital why don't you approach one of the data security merchant's which store your media data (as a backup)? I know a good one if you are interested.

My dad worked for Chubb in the 1960's and they gave him a wall safe. In 1976 my parents bought a new build house in a village near Basingstoke so Dad had them install the safe in a wall while the house was being built. The neighbours must have though my parents had a major jewellery stash or something but the only thing I know of that ever went in the safe was the Christmas tree fairy. biglaugh

It isn't specifically, but I guess there could be insurance implications and even if there aren't they probably have some useful info, so that sounds like an avenue worth pursuing.

Couple of years ago I wanted something similar. On investigation I found that all new fire proof safes struck me as being way way too expensive for what they are, and not exactly large.

So, for a laugh, we ended up buying a HUGE safe off ebay .. ! Its almost as big as an american style fridge and a small person could stand in it. This thing weights nearly a ton, has a 1,000'c 1 hr fire rating, an insurance cash rating of £100,000, has 8 giant 1 inch diameter steel lock bars, and the best bit is that it only cost £200 probably becuase no one wanted to figure out how to arrange movement/delivery. Delivery cost £250 for a specialist safe moving/installing company, who also put it in position with a crane equipped delivery truck, who also thru-bolted it into the concrete base, and its stayed there ever since. Its unlikely to be easily nicked as they'd have to destroy the house to get it back out, and it looks like it would suvive being nuked.

I subsequently found out that the makers, Chubb, used to retail it at £3,500. When we go on hols etc, we can load heaps of stuff in there and feel reasonably comfortable that no passing opportunist burglars are going to have a hope in hells chance of getting into it. And all for £200 notes.

anyone else bought something this daft of ebay ??!

I bought one on ebay too. £20!
I got our specialist carriers to move it, again £20 beer tokens.
I can't move it. I think it is great. I have since put a safe limpet on it and had it wired to the Chubb alarm.
I believe it gives a great seance of security.

Parents have a little wall safe that Dad has fitted himself in each house they've lived in.

In the old house, they had built in wardrobes, the type with backs to them not just the wall. dad took it apart and fixed it so that te back slid accross, took a couple of bricks out, and put the safe there.

It is only tiny, really doesn't hold a lot (shoebox size) but then, it doesn't really need to hehe, but because Dad travelled so much, he used to have a lot of currencies, and kept those in there to save keep changing them, and sentimental stuff, like M&Ds letters whilst he was away etc biggrin

You don’t need to buy a fire proof security safe.

You can get a fire proof container that goes inside a regular safe. This can often be cheaper than the duel function type.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread here, but I thought it better than a repost. It's probably more topical in today's financial climate too! I'm looking for something similar to the OP, so I'm just wondering what you went for in the end. I'm looking for something large enough to store several external hard drives in and some documents in files. It needs to be bigger than your average B&Q offering, but nothing massive.

Google brings back too much to look through if you don't know what you're looking for and ebay doesn't seem to have much to offer at the moment.

Try gun shops - ammunition cabinets are not expensive, easy to fit and will do the trick.

Robert Dyas do neat little safe too:
