Need to sort out my sleeping (or lack of it).
Discussion
I dont seem to sleep, at all and its begining to get to me.
I have just suffered from 4 days of food poisoning (or something similar) and this has f
ked up my mind, body and sleep pattern.
Now Im not a good sleeper at the best of times as it doesnt seem to come as naturally to me as the OH who can pass out at will (this I find annoying), whilst ill I was resting (lying on sofa with eyes closed) during the day and this seemed to mean I no longer needed to sleep at night and I could quite happily lie there all night with my eyes closed and not knowingly go to sleep or get any sleep, so what is the trick to falling asleep other than pills or alcohol, both of which Im not that willing to touch and use as a long term solution.
It seems even when Im physically knackered and shaking, I can't for the life of me get into a state were I can fall asleep or would even know how?? clearing my mind of thoughts, not thinking abouting anything stressfull, nothing seems to relax. So now Im waking up knackered and going to sleep knackered and just seemingly not getting any sleep, is this possible?
Im not stressed at the moment, well I suppose you could class this as stressing me out a little and it will continue to do so until I can get it back on track.
Before anyone suggests, the bedroom has no tv, is nice and cool and the bed is comfy, so Im just lost for what it is that is causing this.

Insomniac here
Short term sleep lost can be easily fixed by Zopiclone for a few days to kick you back into natural rhythem.
Long term is a different matter. I have to take tablets to sleep at night, possibly for the rest of my life - its different for everyone. If you can get it sorted so you dont have to, all the better.

Been on zopiclone and yes it helped and I got off the tablets after just one perscription, but was wondering if anyone can help or think of natural ways that have helped you rather than go to GP, as I can do that and get the drugs I need for the short term but want to find something for the longterm that does not involve drugs and is like the Allan Carr train of thought to brainwash you into not fearing insomnia and this making it worse.
Provided you do not take the piss and keep on doing it there is nothing wrong with a "hot toddy" to knock you out at bed-time. It's warming and relaxing and is available without prescrption and the dangers and side-effects of it's active ingredient are well understood.
I find if I get a sleepless night (which I get a lot) the best thing is to get up. This could mean getting up at 4:00am! But come 10:00pm the next night you will go to sleep. Very important is to avoid the equivalent of spoiling your dinner with snacks...do not nap on the sofa before bed-time...my wife is dreadful for napping and is often up in the night because of it.

Have the same thing. I go to bed usually about midnight and canlie there wide awake till 3 or 4 most nights and wake up at 7.30, massively tired.
I find a cure lat few nights though, obviously physcological, but every night i have brushed my teeth AND used mouth wash. I have slept fine, when i don't use mouth wash, can't sleep.

Dear Fellow Insomniac,
It is one of the worst things not being able to sleep and i feel for you big time, u spend all night wired unable to sleep and the days in a haze.
THere are a number o options you could go donw, drinking and sleeping pills being the least attractive and ones i would stay away from, the pills especially zopiclon will destroy you for the next day and imo it is better to have no sleep than to wake up in that state. Zopiclon affected me very badly, gave me a nasty chemical taste in my mouth and make me feel like i drunk 2 bottes of cheap vodka and gone ten rounds with tyson.
The problem is your mind has now convinced itself that you cannot sleep, you have laid donw or hours with things going through your head like the whole thing about sleep and yoy have probably sel analysed yourself and sleeping to such am extent that everytime you get into a position of sleep your subconcious wont let you.
IN order to get back into your sleeping patterns and it worked for me is to disassosiate yourself from your traditional seeping methods like dark room, cool bla bla bla your forcing yourself into a situation which again will be playing on your sub concious (why arent i asleep i have done everything right) your putting urself under too much pressure whether you knoe it or not.
Get yourslef very comfortable on the sofa a position where you could lie for hours without discomfort and watch some crap on t.v that is boring but takes the focus of you trying to sleep. make sure the volume is on low so that if something happens it does not wake you up. You need to try and take the emphasis off forcing yourself to sleep, its the only way to naturally do it. Eventually your meind will drift off and sleep. Remember sleep is a natural thing like breathing and its not something we ultimately control ouurselves its controlled to an extent by our subconciousso just like if you sit there forcing youself to breath your patterns will become irregular and leave you somewhat panting, its your subconcious that has dictated a pattern for you in order to survive, its the same with sleep
Pills you become dependant on, booze is bad and all the herbal remedies are crap apart from one which is the only affective one that helps me but as its illegal i cannot endorse it.

The bit I dont understand is that for teh past 2 days I have lied there with my eyes closed for a few hours in the day with the food poisoning and then lied there all night again just with my eyes closed and as such dont sleep, but dont feel that tried like sleep deprived, my head does feel asleep and hazy all day and then the process happens again.... how with out severe medical issues is it possibly surviving?

If I dont take Mirtazapine on a nightly basis, I simply do not sleep.Ran out of tablets because I forgot to get my prescription in on time and I was without for a week. After the 3rd day, the sleeplessness came back and I was literally sleeping one night of every 4 out of exhaustion.
Quite happy with the druuuugs

I used to have major problems and there are a couple of threads about this topic. I did the following:
1) Go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time (Well try to) I do this at weekends as well now and whilst it may be boring, it does help me)
2) I don't drink any caffine. No tea/coffee and this has given me 45 mins extra sleep per night
3) I exercise more. I always did some exercise, but now do some almost every day
4) I try to eat before 9pm every night, ideally 7pm
5) I use the principal that I need to be active all the time I am awake so that I am actually tired when I go to bed. I force myself to do things until 8pm most evening and then take a couple of hours to start relaxing (But still doing things like admin around the house etc
I know it's not the same as your situation , but this helped me

Becasue you are actually falling asleep, you just don't realise it. Bursts of micro-sleep are helpful and can go completely unnoticed by the person trying to sleep.I think its the slowly drifting away bit I hate, sometimes it was sudden and then next thing I know is that I wake up or remember dreams. Tho at the moment it just feels like no sleep and its boring lying there for hours and the person next to you is snoring away.
Must admit I do wake her up now and again to make myself feel better and she just assumes she woke up!

After having my father bumped off by the harlot he married after mum died I struggled to sleep for quite a while for fairly obvious reasons.
I found the best way is to clear your mind, for me I think of each of my family and friends in turn and wish them well and give them a kiss or hug as suits.
Only problem now is that I can go to sleep almost immediately I complete the process and then snore like a b
d which annoys SWMBO something chronic.

However long you do manage to sleep, go to bed that length of time before you need to get up. Then gradually, over time, extend the period you spend in bed and your time asleep should extend with it. Do this until you are getting the full 7/8 hours or however long the experts are saying we need this month.
