Just got this at work from a colleague, it's also on our Intranet:

My workplace said:
International Earth Hour asks us to switch off lights and appliances for one hour at 8pm tomorrow, Saturday 29 March.

At the 'Switch Off' hour remember to switch all appliances off of standby, turn off digital displays, switch off lights and turn off switches at the wall (but do leave your fridge and freezer switched on so as not to spoil any food that is energy-intensive to produce!).

"A Person", Community and Environmental Affairs Manager says: “The main cause of man-made climate change is the increasing rate at which carbon dioxide (CO2) is being released into the atmosphere. As homeowners, we use approximately one third of the UK's total energy requirements and contribute 27 per cent of the UK's CO2 emissions through heating, lighting, cooking etc. However, if we all do a little bit to reduce our homes' emissions, together we are able to make a big difference.
By taking part in International Earth Hour, and encouraging our friends and family to do the same, we can all take action on climate change. Don’t forget: before you leave work for the weekend, switch off your PC monitor.“

If you’re interested in finding out more about this initiative, or would like to register your support, please visit www.wiltshirewildlife.org.
Is anybody else suffering employer sponsered crap like this?

They could at least ask you to do it during the day so you could see what's going on.

Yes. I was just about to start a thread on this. My 'reminder' was accompanied with this piece of helpful advice:

"Check out this global event taking place tomorrow. It’s a simple idea, to show your support for the fight against climate change and to highlight just how much energy we are all consuming every day, much of which is wasted, switch off your house lights for one hour starting at 8:00pm tomorrow evening. You could also include TV’s stereos, and all the stuff you normally leave on standby such as the microwave, the oven, video recorders, stereos. etc. (they nearly all have a pointless clock in them these days)."

Can anyone explain to me how having my house lights on at 8.00pm is wasting electricity? It's fking dark.

There was a thread on this recently - no, I'm not the repost police.

This was mentioned:

http://www.e-day.org.uk/

Note that the little greenie line ends up above the little red line - so E-DAY used more energy than normal. Fantastic initiative nuts

Let's hope for a repeat performance hehe

ETA That was back in late February but lots of independent commercial radio stations seem to be going for a repeat on 29 March.

I don't see how any of this will reduce the amount of steam in the turbines in the power stations.

So what the hell is the point?

To be fair, I usually turn off all lights, and turn the TV off standby as a matter of course (when not using them obviously).

Not because I want to save the plannet, but because I'm tighter than a ducks arse.

I will retire before I'm 50.

Thanks for pointing this out, not heard of it before. I will now turn on every light in my flat and ensure that every plug socket is used and turned on for the hour in question.

For my part I shall go out and kill a cow. Although at that time of night I will need to use a torch.

In the interests of health and safety at home, I shall be forced to make sure that all our lights and heating are maxed, if there's less light coming in from outside it makes perfect sense.

The last time we had a power cut in our estate, I fired up the car and ran the TV and living room lights off a power inverter connected to the alternator.

Our house was like a beacon of civilisation in a post-apocalyptic world.

Obviously it's more romantic to sit in the dark with candles...

Here's a wacky idea, why not turn off your appliances and not leave them on standby TO REDUCE YOUR BLOODY RIP OFF ELECTRIC BILL! Sod CO2 why dont they appeal to what really matters to people, they will get a far better take up.

Oh sorry I forgot, all those scammers with climate change or carbon footprint in their job descriptions will be out of a job.

Anyone remember in the 80s when we were told to save energy to stop the oil, coal and gas running out. CO2 in those days used to be something every person on the planet breathed out 24 hours a day......

A torch would only stun it surely?

Use one of these buggers and you could beat it to death AND cook it:

No mention of the fact that most power generation in the UK is run at "base load" most of the time. So we'll be burning the same amount of fuel, only most of it will be wasted. Clever bds! Do they really thing a plant with a generating capacity of more than 2GW can just switch off for a bit coz' Edna's not watching corrie.

Ahh, but if you strap the torch to a shotgun you can dazzle the cow (and not only with your brilliant thinking) and then beat it to death with the barrel.
