I once had a bloke phone me, asking me to tell someone that I'd never heard of that his kids football team was not going to be able to make it to a fixture, and could the guy I'd never heard of ring to arrange another date. I politely explained that he had the wrong number, and that I was sorry but I couldn't help. He rang off; and phoned back at five minute intervals to be told the same thing. After the eight or tenth time with me getting more and more exasperated I told him that I'd let guy I'd never heard of know about it, and never heard from him again.
Mrs Puggit kept getting someone in Pakistan phoning her and whittering away in some kind of babble.
No amount of persuading them in English that they had the wrong number helped, and they called back at kinds of times for 2 or 3 weeks.
I got an answerphone message in French last week, the only words I could make out were 'surrender', 'run' and 'I give up'.

I'm in the unfortunate position that all three of my home numbers (phone, fax and mobile) have double digits - 77 on the phone, 66 on the fax and 55 on the mobile. It means I'm a magnet for wrong numbers - the most common being people calling my fax trying to get through to Domestic and General Insurance.
One guy called around 20 times in half an hour, so thinking it was someone trying to send me something, I called back (caller ID) and he still asked if I knew anyone who could fix his washing machine.

my grandfather was brilliant at these, his number was very close to the ford axle plant in swansea, and very close to to a local vets number as well.
i remember him telling one persistant wrong number dialler who was complaining about a noisy back axle on a new car, that if he didn't mind, he could pop round the factory on monday morning, and they'd change it while he waited!
he'd quite often spend up to 20 minutes on the phone to people talking about their pets before he'd let on that they'd phoned the wrong number.

I had a wrong number on sunday morning. It was a girl called nicola offering to give me head if we met up again..... she also confessed that she'd lied when she said she was 18; she confessed that she was 14 but would be 15 next month!
I told her she had the wrong number but she pressed on regardless! In the end I just put the phone down.
After making a note of the number to call in about 18 months time

i had a little old lady on the phone who called my number repeatedly 4 times asking if i was the community centre.
what took the biscuit is she got quite angry with me on the 4th one when i said "you've got the wrong number again" nicely. she became quite insistant that i was the community centre. "i'm sure this is the right number".....

I have a very easy land line number at home (very similar to local taxi & council!)
numerous times have called distressed old ladies back to inform them I'm not the council! (Imagine them sat there waiting you see)
Have occasionally (when drunk) when someone calls late at night for a taxi - that it is on it's way! (I've stopped this now & just dont answer if dont recognise)
I dont honestly mind when they apologise, but some people are so rude - either slam the phone down on hearing 'wrong number'and even ask me for the correct number they want - unbelievable - am I fkng directory enquiries???!

it may not of been that pretty.
My old company acquired a block of numbers which used to be used by the local council. One such number was still being advertised on their websites.
Unfortunately for one of my colleagues, it was the telephone number for the registration of births and deaths. He had to tell countless grieving relatives that they had the wrong number.

"Mom called herself Sweet Juliette and I called myself The Prince of Pleasure, and unfortunately, neither one of us had any idea who the other was," said flabbergasted Daniel.

"Dad was ticked for a while and he forbid Mom to talk to anybody on the Internet ever again," said embarrassed Daniel.
