Ona recent trip to NZ I looked at my host's roof and noticed a copper pipe sticking up about 10 feet. Not a lightning conductor, but some cunning way of increasing water pressure. How's that work then? Could it be used over here?

Don't see how it would work tbh, unless the header tank is on the top of it.

Or farts down it, that would increase the water pressure!

I was wondering how you ensure a seal when farting down the pipe Vixpy?

If you think that's farting, you must whistle through your arse....

At the risk of bringing this thread back on topic.....

Our antipodean friends sometimes feed the hot water cylinder directly from the mains and instead of the 3-tier safety we demand on UHW in this country they simply fit an adjustable Pressure Reducing Valve on the inlet and extend the vent up through the roof to a reasonable height. If the pressure is then reduced until water no longer flows from the pipe the expansion problems of UHW are effecively dealt with. I say 'effectively'...... if the pipe blocks there could be trouble. If a pressurised cylinder bursts the power of vapourising hot water is such that the walls might not last.

You can now get mains pressure hot water cylinders here but they are so expensive that you won't be able to afford the gas to heat the water!

'Mains pressure' isn't strictly true since they are all governed by a pressure reducing valve.

'Unvented Hot Water' would be more accurate. We've been fitting them here for 20 odd years....

It seems we have a fair amount of plumbing/boiler questions and answers on here - do we need a separate forum, like 'The Pipe and Cistern'?

Okay but presumably they avoid the need for shower pumps?
