Hi

I need to send a box of goods (not commercial) to the USA but want to keep the cost down. I'm not too bothered about the delivery time (but it does need to get there eventually and be covered by insurance if it doesn't) so does anyone have any suggestions? Should I just be looking at UPS, DHL, etc.?

Cheers.

roadie.

Sort of depends on the weight and dimensions of box.

Try contacting ErictheBrave as he does this sort of thing with his company Moving Parts.

Just make sure you put a name with the return address or else their customs will simply reject it and send it back, as I recently found out.

AS VHR says - it depends on teh size/weight.

But surface Via Royal mail is cheap and can be done signed for, but takes up to 8 weeks.

How big? How heavy and what are you sending?

You WILL need to put a commercial invoice with the goods(4 copies) even if they are F.O.C. That will need your name and full address as the sender, name and full address of the receiver, accurate description of goods and value (this CANNOT be 'nil'). The value must be realistic. Something like: "Capacitors for testing to destruction" 10 USD/7.00 GBP is fine. And they will all need an original signature from yourself on each.

If you can, obtain a Commodity Code - this will tell US Customs what duty (if any) is applicable.

If there is no rush and it is a small package then go Royal Mail (it will take absolutely ages though) or try UPS.

Larger stuff will need a shipping/groupage company.

Mail me if I can help you further.

Would NOT recommend using DHL after the hair loss they caused me when I tried to get an urgent package delivered out to Corfu last summer.

Absolutely not Royal Mail. I had to get something to the US in a hurry a while back, and was impressed by the web-site tracking and 'probable' delivery times.

Well, whenever I logged on to see where it was at, all the tracking would say was "Your package is being processed by Royal Mail", and it turned up at the other end more than a week after it should have done. And this was to downtown Manhattan, not Tumbleweed, North Dakota.
