Video'd / watched this last night, in between CBB.

What a fabulously moving television programme.

Really felt for the por bugger, what with the fate of his great grandparents.

A great piece of telly.

Anyone else watch it?

Ahh damn. I really wanted to see that. I have a lot of time and respect for Stephen Fry - one of our great modern gents, IMHO.

It could be dumped to DVD and circulated, if there was enough demand.

As the great man mentioned, makes you realise how bloody fortunate we are in this country, in this day and age.

The scene of the nazi officer holding up the old woman's chin with a riding crop made me physically queasy.

I have a faded old photo of my uncle in the cockpit of a Hurricane during the war and when I think all this was going on just 60-odd years ago, it does rather focus the mind.

We were fighting pure, unadulterated evil.

Horrific.

It was a moving experience to watch that programme.

Even though it happened over sixty years ago, that scene with the riding crop made me as angry as if I had just seen it in the street.

I watched it and thought it was excellent, especially the fact he drives a 'F' reg London Taxi and a Jag and the taxi has a numper plate obscuring cover on the back plate!
Would have been good if they could have discovered what happened to Pavel Lamm the missing child from the concentration camps.

There's enough demand from me! Just tried PMing you but the mail bounced. Can you PM me and we can sort out a copy? Thanks

I only caught the last half an hour or so and it was a truly great insight into Stephens, and others, family histories. I have always been a great fan of Stephen Fry and it was great to see an upclose and personal documentary that really did get me thinking. Mr Fry is a one of the last true bastions of Britishness left on our telly and I really do hope we see more of him on our screens soon (new series of QI anyone?).

It is truly amazing to think that in the modern world (let's face 60 years ago isn't that long) things like this can go on and made me realize just how lucky we are toady and how much we actually take for granted. It kind of puts it into perspective when you see rants about front fog lights and the congestion charge and actually cheered me up to think that this is all that we have to moan about.

A great televisual feast.

I thought it was an excellent installment too - the last WDYTYA I saw was Jeremy Clarkson's so I've got some catching up to do.

It brought into perspective how tolerant a society we really do live in - yes so we have a go at scrotes and numpties on here but the thought of an economically advanced state instigating a mechanised policy of genocide against essentially all but a particular demographic is truly horrifying.

The bittersweet thing is - and I'm trying to word this the best way I can - I am massively grateful that we fought and won the second world war. Prior to WW2, it was almost acceptable to be racist or anti-Semitic, or to hold views on extreme eugenics - even in Britain (how else did Moseley drum up such support?). Nowadays, although we complain about political correctness, I'd rather see that as a long-lasting legacy of the second world war than public support of mass race extermination.

And I know genocide has happened around the world, but we know to fight it now. We went to war against the likes of Milosevic and Saddam mainly because of their human rights abuses, and thank God we did or else they'de still be running Hitlerian regimes.

However, I really think it's about time we did something about Africa, and Mugabe in particular. That sort of state still exists, but it seems that if it sits in the United Nations and calls itself a Democracy, all we can do is talk.

No repeat transmission times, but they often show this kind of stuff at night with BSL.

For info, this site is pretty darn good:

www.tvgenius.co.uk/

It will tell you when any programme you've missed is repeated, and even text you to remind you. Also good for just general listings.

Unfortunately WDYTYA isn't repeated by the looks of things....

Agreed.

There you go TC, I am capable of agreeing with you

However - whats in it for the US? Oil? What?

I am both surprised and dismayed that he is literally getting away with murder.

For a split second when I saw the thread title I thought Stephen Fry had decided to do a Spice Girls cover.
