1.5m council workers threaten to strike
Discussion
So 1.5m council workers think that saving 6% for their pensions is enough (I contribute 15%!), and that we - the taxpayers - should pay even more then the 26% that it's reported goes from our council tax in to public pensions (Sunday Telegraph stats).
It's not like we're even going to notice if they go on strike!!

Biggest Strike In Decades
Updated: 16:49, Monday January 23, 2006
More than 1.5 million local authority workers are to be balloted over strike action in a row over pensions.
Nine trade unions representing workers including school dinner ladies, teaching assistants, social workers and refuse collectors will ballot their members.
If a strike goes ahead it will be one of the biggest for decades.
The unions say the move is in protest at planned cuts to their pension scheme.
Dave Prentis, general secretary of UNISON, said the pensions issue was of paramount importance to his members.
He said: "It affects the rights of one million of our members who have paid 6% of their salaries into their pension scheme for decades to save for their retirement and are now being told that the deal is off.
"The local government employers and the Government should be in no doubt of how serious we are.
"All we are asking is for members of the local government pension scheme to be treated fairly - the same way as other public sector workers."
The result of the ballots are expected towards the end of February.

School Dinner ladies? The little children will have to have sandwiches...politically bad but no other problem.
Actually we will all notice if no-one empties the bins. The bin people genuinely have us all over a barrel. Sure - I might bag up my rubbish and take it to the dump - but if everyone needs to do that it will be impossible to get in and out of it. The local chavs will simply leave bin bags out on the street. Then come the vermin. Then disease.
Yep. The sooner we automate the bins the better.

The only people that deserve unions IMO are the health workers and essential staff and they never do! (well bar the fireman a while ago)
FELLOW IT BROTHERS AND SISTERS, MASS WALK OUT NOW!

Being Devil's advocate here, aren't many of these workers on extremely low pay?
That's a myth, average pay in the public sector is now higher than in the private sector. They also have very generous pension schemes to boot, which could well bankrupt this country.
The pay most certainly isn't higher, at least not in finance and admin, and most definatelty not IT. I can't comment on other sectors. The overall package settlements are however excellent.
You mentioned pensions, which is a big bonus, but the real killer has to be that in the private sector a level of expertise is required, or at the very least competence. Once in the private sector it would seem that these shackles of commercial viability are removed, and career progression is assured regardless of virtue, talent or suitability to the role.

What source/s are you basing this opinion on. I used do a lot of work with the public sector & have been involved previously in some organisational design with a couple of departments. It remains that where comparable, job-for-job the pay is a significant % lower than private sector. On the other hand holiday is typically better, average working hours are lower & pensions better.
