In light of a lot of the negative 'what a cnut' threads recently I thought I'd share a nice positive story.

Was washing my car yesterday when the bloke accross the road but one comes over (retired electrical engineer) and basically says he's got some stuff in his garage he doesnt use anymore, he's seen me working on my car and do I want it? Well as well as some well thick jumpleads from about 1972 and an ace set of ramps, he gives me his old welder and gear that he recon'd before he retired. He used to use it on big transformers or something?

Result! And he's going to give me welding lessons!

Don't you just love it when someone gives you sommat for nowt?

Nice one! What kind of welding gear? Whichever, it's a useful skill to have... and surprising how often you can find a use for it, too.

I use welding cable for jump leads: probably about as cheap as a pair of Halfords fuse-wire specials if you get it from the right place...

No idea, there are some 'rods' with it? Theres no gas required, and some knobs on the front of the box with strange numbers like 50/80 90/135 that kind of thing if that means anything to you?

I fancy a big half an oil-drum barbecue with a car bonnet lid, might need a few lessons first though! I'm gonna scrounge some scrap metal from the dump and he's going to show me what do do apparently.

..must buy thicker jump leads..

halfords car leads are no good for diesel land rovers - but they do burn quite well !!

Welding suppliers. Couple of lengths of 1500A cable, four big croc clamps. Job done

i 've been using the ones we have at work that are used to start an old Bedford TK horsebox and a Routemaster
The cable is so thick it won't coil without a fight!

Funny you should mention that, my mate's got an old mkiii that he wants to have a go on - I take it it will be a case of 'some escort with your weld sir?'

I always had the oposite effect - my stick welding attempts did a good impersonation of a plasma cutter
