Right. i have been at my new job for 2 weeks (it's going well, thanks for asking) and I am typically doing 1hr a day longer but going to meetings so actually sitting at my desk doing proper work than i used to...
... anyway, (!) yesterday I got home watched the telly for a bit and my eyes went all wonky and out of focus so i just went to bed...woke up at 3am with a (**really**)massive headache (and i don't get bonce ache usually) and it felt like my brain wanted to explode out of my eye...so eventually, after an hour, i went and ate so paracetemol and then after another hour i nodded off for an hour to wake up was a slightly-more-than-dull-ache which seemed to be accentuated by leaning forward...

...so to make a short story long - what the Dickens happened..? i eat too much red meat but I surely wasn't having a stroke at 25yrs old..!

If it's a pain in your eyes I would look too your monitor at work. What type it is and how far you are sitting from it.

Get the monitors refresh (Hz) rate checked too, it needs to be at minimum 70/75hz, higher preferred or it can cause eye strain.

I kind of thought this, BUT monitor is a 17"(ish) tft i used to have a 19" at old job so that would have a similar (or worse resolution i guess)..?

it is airconditioned but less so than my old place (it's a bit 'older skool')... you might have hit on something with the dehydration thing cos i am now getting the tube so that could be doing something untoward..

you'd think i'd give my eye a rest and get off here...wouldn't you..!

Look away from the screen and focus on something else for a few seconds at least every few minutes as well.

i do tend to do that (the benefits of a short attention span!) - but maybe subconcsiously i have been doing it less and straining more as i have been having to 'concentrate' more as i have been picking up loads of new stuff..hmm - getting somewhere i feel!

this is looking good at least no one thinks it's anything too full on!

I had dreadful trouble with migraines last year and ultimately it turned out that I was sitting badly at my desk which had caused a neck problem which had triggered the migraines. Ask your employer to do a workstation assessment for you - they are obliged to - although the law firm I worked for previously had a big of a problem actually doing them!

i think the workstation assessment is the cause.. i phoned the guy up and said i needed to do it so i could just get rid of the form - he said i had to wait a fortnight so i could 'do a session' with other new starters.." i said 'yeah, whatever i just want to get the form got rid of' and then the next day this happened..!

the monitir is a bit higher up...i'll have a play...

...is there a (good) generic online DIY workstation assessment i can do..?

Neck pains can trigger very bad headaches. I used to get bad ones, there are some neck exercises you can do to (safely) stretch and loosen up your neck muscles.

Baskey - amongst other things I discovered my monitor was too high - try to avoid doing "pokey chin" where you're head rolls back and your chin pokes out. try and sit well so that your trunk is straight - it's very difficult for your neck to relax if you're holding your midsection well.

Tell them you're having problems with your neck - I got a work station assessment on my first day in my new job on the basis of my existing neck problem!

Deal with it sooner rather than later, believe me it's not good dealing with it after a number of months.
