Watched that film last night (which I thought was very good) but always get slightly annoyed at the phrase "based on a true story" as it is basicaly meaningless.

Does anyone know the actual story behind this film?
I did google it but a lot of irrelevance came up!
Thanks

Edit... Oh no: what sort of puts a post like this in general gassing ?
I am sooooooo embarassed- i will be the laughing stock of pistonheads!

Is this the one in the Australian outback where some nutter kills and terrorises a young couple?

If so its likely based on the Peter Falconio/Joanne Lees story. Google will find you the story details and Getty Images will get you pictures of Joanne Lees. Horrific tale. Difficult court case. Not over yet as the "convictee" is appealing.

this is the one where the police suspected she had something to do with it as none of her evidence seemed to add up and she had been knobbing someone else.....????

Nope- nothing to do with that just a similar 'outback abduction' type story involving 3 travellers.

As I understand it the police did not suspect she was something to do with it.
She did indeed have an affair with someone else. Some time prior to the incident. The court thought it irrelevant.
The Australian media, on the other hand, for some time did indeed suggest she'd done in her lover herself. One could argue as to what their motivation was for suggesting such a thing. Could be their love of salacious gossip. Could have been an unwillingness to believe an Aussie could be guilty of such a thing when there's a perfectly good Brit to blame...could have been simply pointing out the obvious...that it wasn't an unreasonable thing to check out and make sure wasn't true.

Luckily Australia, like most other civilised countries, does not believe in trial by media. So the Aussie cops investigated and arrested Bradley Murdoch and their courts found Murdoch guilty and jailed him for life.

Not exactly a happy ending. But since we'll never review the evidence in the detail the court did we must accept they got it right.

The 'true story' element to the film was that there have been cases of people going into the outback and not returning. Everything else is 100% artistic licence, made up purely for shock and gore, and should be taken not so much with a pinch of salt, more the entire salt shaker... Didn't enjoy it myself, but hey, that's just my opinion.

I guess it's a bit like Open Water (pants movie - nowt fr*ggin' happens?!?) - based on a true story in that, yes, people have gone out on boat trips and not come back, but everything else in the film is pure fantasy.

Actually it is Open Water that has made me mistrust every 'true story' since.
There is more to this film than you suggest, however, as the footnote at the end of the film talk about the survivor 'Ben Mitchell' who after coming under Police suspicion was cleared and now lives in South Australia.

You have a very loose definition of the word 'interest'

Sort of, it was the first book in a 4 book series, but book 4 actually went right back to the time before book 1 (if you get what I mean..it was a sort of prequel)

Film was nothing like the books though! (mad mother does not die in the first book!)

Yes it was. Story of 4 children locked in an attic so the mother can inherit a fortune.
the 2 oldest kids get it on together and then escape.

I agree that the film is nothing like the book, and that annoyed me. But hey ho.

Still cant find anything on the background to the book. Its one of lifes unexplained mysteries, like the Loch Ness Monster (which obviously does exist).

official wolf creek movie website said:
Fact: WOLF CREEK is not based on any one story or case but echoes some of the elements of recent crimes of hideous unparalleled violence and brutality
It then has details of four 'case studies' (all apparently quite nasty) that 'inspired' the film. Seems the true story tag is justification for the gratuitous violence and 'shaky-cam' directing.

I'm sure if I'd stayed in the cinema long enough to see the end credits, the usual 'all characters are fictional...' disclaimer (like in Open Water) would've rolled up - if any one's got the DVD (is it out yet?), it might be worth looking to see if it does.

Edit: I'll echo the Praise for Fargo - superb film.

MR2-Yes I saw it on DVD last night. At the end it said what I said above i.e. that stuff about Ben Mitchell which contradicts what you have read from the official site.
