Hi,

we are a school and we want a shiny new plasma ( or lcd? ) screen for reception to display welcome mr and mrs smith type messages, powerpoint displays, videos etc.

we dont need it to have tv on it.

should i just get a normal plasma u get anywhere or are there specialist ones out there for this sort or application? I take it plasma it better than lcd for big size?

If i then at a future date what a string of plasma tv's around the site displaying information what future proofing do i need to do for this one screen - ie special cabling etc?

any help / pointers appreciated.

This one looks ideal.

I hear it's as good as new.

I'd go for LCD over Plasma unless you need something that's 42 inches plus in size? LCD has far better resolution and screen life than plasma, so it will last longer too. Have a look at the Samsung range of flat panels or, if it really is only ever going to be used for PC-type applications, then check out some of the screens the bigger PC manufacturers offer.

Regarding cabling for future screens you will need specialist equipment (similar to the digital signage systems you see around big retail outlets now), to port the signal around from a single source to more than one screen. Standard monitor cables won't run more than a few metres without degradation to the picture quality.

There's a magazine called Digital Display for Retail out there, so might be worth tracking a copy down and giving a few people a call with your requirements.

rubbish.......this is a mis-conception about plasma.....plasma screens are lifed to an average of 60,000 watching hours....so at 4 hours a day that works out at 41 years....not really an issue as i see it???

All the rumours of "they need re-gassing" etc are just that...rumours....they are sealed units

Just Googled it and it averages at about 15,000 watching hours. Still about a third more than a conventional CRT display though!

Nope!

Even winds me up in business. One company I worked for decided one Christmas that there would be no annual pay review. Within a week of the announcement all 3 buildings had large shiny new LCD screens in reception - back when they cost a bomb.

Irresespective of life issues, plasmas are very susceptible to burn in. Not a good idea to use one with a static text display etc.

So how long can you leave an image on an LCD screen for before you risk ‘burning’ it? Just wondered as I have just set up my new 40” Samsung

Before Nick P shoots me down...

Shouldn't have an issue with LCD's, but if you do get a persistant image, then Apple suggest you create a completely white jpeg and use it as a screensaver until the image fades. On a TV your best bet would be to burn a white jpeg to disk and run it in your dvd player.

all samsungs have the 'pixel shift' facilty which helps prevent burn in....but i understand that you should not leave static images for more than a couple of hours at a time

Er afaik LCDs don't burn in. Apparently some can leave a bit of an afterimage if you stay static a long time, but it will clear itself up. With plasma, once its burnt in, its there forever.

Samsung 40" M series is good.
