Title says it all realy. Fancied a properly cooked steak with no funny sauces and some fries or something. The best steak i have ever had was on the river front in Prague. It was medium rare and properly seared so you had the lovely tender beef with the strong flavour.
Is there a chain or something, i remember the bernie steak in but they were cr*p!

Aberdeen Angus steak houses in London - Leicester Sq. Dunno what they are like but the meat always smells good walking past it.

Either that or try doing it yourself

On a side street over the road from the front of Harrods there is a restaurant which knows how to cook a steak. Can't remember the name of the place or the street sorry (not a Londoner)

City wise - I like Smiths of Smithfield has some good stuff, and is reasonably priced (if you go for the Bistro / 3rd floor).

Others you could try - Bar and Grill (again in Smithfield) has Kobe beef - if you want the best.

Try the Gaucho Grill - has to be THE best steak in London IMO. Check out the menu:

Le Mercury, Upper Street, Islington.

Excellent little French restaurant that does a cracking steak.

Have you ever tried Outback Steakhouses.

We first went to one on Florida on holiday. They are Australian themed and do good steaks. There are now a few in London. We've been to the one at Staines - pleasant location, on the river.

I concur. Just don't have a desert from there. Spanish speaking countries (and restaurants that sell their cuisine) don't do good deserts.

Lat time I went I started with a delicious chorizo on a bed of sauteed green beans and cherry tomatoes. Then a 400g Fillet, with a baked potato and soured cream. Side order of asparagus. Sauce not necessary. Terrauno Cabernet Sauvignon to wash it down with.

Mmm....

Failing that you could fish one out of a skip which would probably be better/safer.

What is the best way to cook a steak then and what should I ask for at the butchers?

Actually, that's a good idea - head down to Borough market and one of the butchers there does Galloway beef - it's hung for about 4-5 weeks, which makes it really tender and flavoursome.

Hungry now...

Aberdeen Steak Houses are about 1 step up from MacDonalds in terms of culinary excellence!

I think they're a front for a secret criminal organisation. Have you ever noticed how they've been around for decades, yet every time you walk past the only people in there are one family of confused looking tourists...

Aberdeen Steak Houses are very strange - their rents must be astronomical too.

Angus Steak Houses on the other hand are wonderful. You may have to book months ahead to get a window seat though.

Oh yes! There used to be one in south Kensington which was sold a while back. Had lunch at it's successor when it opened. Got talking to the manager and mentioned that no-one ever seemed to be in there when it was open as a Steak House. He said hmmm, he had seen the books, and there had been about £50,000 of sales a week going through every week At that rate it would have been about a £1000 a meal!

On the original question, if it is still there, Rowleys in Jermyn Street used to be good. Mega chips too!
