Britain has more people in prison than any E.U country....
Discussion
........including `so called` states where there human rights are worse than ours...
A large portion of these inmates are non-dangerous fine defaulters, remand prisoners and all manner of other `crappy` crimes.
I thought we were apparently `free` after WW2. It seems to me that the goverment want to see us locked up, making goods for industry at £4.00 a week, all for being a bad boy. Life can throw all sorts of dice and sometimes mistakes are made and people take some bad/`illegal` decisions. Poverty, alcohol and drug abuse/dependancy are part of some peoples life. It`s easy to say Britain is great when you have a high paying job and a nice pad but some people out of work, retired on a state pension etc find life a real struggle with real money problems and only £40.00 a week to try to keep up with the lavish lifestyle the media encourages us to all pursue. Try getting a decent job after prison and you`d soon give up.. All I`m trying to say is let`s not lose sight of where this country`s draconian laws will take us 30 years down the line as we all tell each other how good our lambo,TVR or other £50 000 sports cars are.
Just think if you injured yourself at work/or while pursuing your racing at the weekend. The big pad/fancy sports car would have to go.....welcome back to reality....£37.50 a week...wow.. you now have big problems...I don`t want 1001 tiny, stupid laws ready to trip me up. Prison should be used to keep violent/dangerous people from harming others.
In some cities in Britain the fine for dropping a cigarette butt is £70 !!!...nearly double the weekly income support!...sorry kids daddy dropped his fag while shopping with mummy so there will be nothing for dinner for 2 weeks....Can`t pay the fine? "clang".. .PRISON!

Britain also has one of the highest crime rates of any EU country.
You have to compare sentences for similar crimes, not the total number of people in prison.
Oh and give me a break on the poverty cr*p those with children on benefits do very well indeed.

Quite right. And it doesn't stop there.
My mother in law is a widow in her 70's. Her next door neighbour is also a widow, a couple of years older. Both my father in law and the chap next door worked for the same company on the shop floor for 30 odd years in similar jobs with similar pay. Because my father in law worked hard and saved for retirement my mother in law has some modest savings now. By contrast the chap next door pissed away a lot of money at the bookies and down the pub leaving very little for retirement. Result - the widow next door gets all her council tax paid for plus lots of other benefit whilst my mother in law gets sweet FA.
That's what Gordon Brown means when he talks about targeting benefits to the poor. He actually means the feckless.
I do tend to agree that sending more and more people to prison is not the answer though, but then I am in favour of a return to capital punishment and restorative justice.
If you beat someone up in the process of mugging them, then you should be publically beaten and forced to work in a labour gang for a period of time.
If you steal from a shop you should have to forfeit some your possesions or receive a public beating.
etc. Locking someone up with 3 square meals a day, TV, a games room and half of their thieving mates does not seem to me to be a serious punishment.

BUT...who determins the crime and punishment? ..the goverment?
Sounds like an excellent way to control the people.. where does `freedom` come in?
Sorry I don't accept that. We have a pretty independent judiciary in this country, look how often Blunkett and now Big Ears have been hauled up before it as Home Sec.
Freedom comes from being free not to have to worry about being mugged and burgled by scrotes who should be locked away.

In Singapore they have quite a harsh penal regeime - drug dealers get hanged, thieves get dealt with very severely etc.. But guess what? Very very little crime.
Punishment works.
Pharmacy`s are "drug dealers"...
Gordan Brown is the biggest thief in Britain...
Now you're just being silly.
