....a while back you might remember my valentines dilema. Now the thing is I've never had a serious relationship over valentines and in the past it was a card, some flowers and maybe a meal.

This year, I'd like to get something very special for her. Now the other thing is I'm going to be in Bulgaria visiting her non-English speaking parents so I've got to be careful about what I give and chances are on Valentines I'm going to be in a private chalet with her whilst skiing. (But with her family in the chalet next door).

So you see my problem....at least I hope you do!

I was thinking of some very nice lingerie. I know this sounds trashy, but she said she'd like something nice but I've been looking at hundreds of lingerie webpages (all in the name of research of course), and I've no idea what to get her. She loves the colour pink so if it lingerie, I guess that would be ideal but you girls have all sorts of crazy things to wear and what's trashy and whats sexy, etc, etc.....

Other than lingerie, is there anything else I could give her? Again something special but not ott.

Thanks all from "a very confused about what to get", Beanbag.

Lingerie or jewellery would get my vote.

If it's lingerie find yourself a nice small boutique to go to in the UK before you go and go and talk to the staff there. They really won't try to sell you tacky Christmas red! Make sure you know what sizes she wears top and bottom - check through her drawers (!) or washing basket to find out. Do be prepared though for it not to fit even if you've bought "her size".

I imagine you know what sort of pants she wears? (don't buy her little shorts if she usually wears thongs or visa versa).

Basques and suspender belts are (IMO) a little predictable and perhaps a touch dated. There are some really pretty little camisole tops and knicker sets around - this takes some of the guesswork out of getting a bra that will actually fit.

Happy hunting!

for the undies - look up figleaves - where my missus goes for her smalls... and avoid nylon in thongs apparently... look for lycra content...

oh and figleaves apparently have tuned thier bra search for manufactors sizes to actual sizes.. so you can search their range for your lass' size and it'll show you what bras you can get in that size

actually - if you can pluck up the curage follow above - visit a shop (tho anne summers might not be what the poster was thinking of )

Cheers for the advice. I've already rummaged through the drawers and have her size but here's problem number 2. I live in Vienna and the shop assistants speak little or no English. (And I speak no German....at least the lingerie variety )
Do bra shapes vary that much that some don't fit even though they are the same size?

Yes unfortunately they can do its amazing how often this happens.

If you can live with it take a pair with you to the shop and that way you can show the shop assistants what you want, and you could compare the size at the same time.

Lycra content is good cos it has a little give and take, pink is a nice colour, stay away from anything too dark or too bright, remember she will have to wear them under something and if they show through her clothes they're no good.

Good luck.

Personally I would stick with the jewelry, but then I have had some major disasters with lingerie! Several times over the years, with different partners, I have tried buying (expensive) lingerie, and each time has been an unmitigated disaster. Every time i have bought "rocks" it has been a major success.

Just my experience...

Seeing as she has said she would like something nice, why not ask her (maybe armed with a catalogue of some sort) what kind of things she likes then she can say 'oooh something like this or this, but defiantely not that!' and ask her what size she is, then go out armed with your research.

At least if you have an idea of what she would buy you are part way there and if you know her size then you are the rest of the way there.

Failing that....take her shopping!

Done that in Milan! Highly recommended!
Sat there drinking espresso while she paraded around in various bits of lingerie until I expressed a preference.

Took me 2 hours to make a decision.

Never....you'd need the mother of all chalets............must be a hangar.

Try to ignore the Valentine thing...once you start, you'll never be allowed to stop.

So Beanbag having mentioned that he speaks hardly any German, and the shop assistants speak no English, has been advised to wander into a shop in the middle of Vienna holding a bra and panties and making 'tit' shaped gestures to the staff

I can see the headlines.......

My girlfriend loves stuff from Elle McPherson

So occasionally (so as not to spoil her) I take a trip to John Lewis at Bluewater.

It never fails to impress.

This might be a surprise, but I actually agree with this (though not because of the 'never allowed to stop' bit). Valentines is a bit synthetic and there's so much pressure attached to it - as is demonstrated perfectly here It's nice to send eachother a card because it's an opportunity to say nice things, but I'd save the grand gestures for times that are more personal to you.

Shnozz - if I nudged him to buy me jewellery, he wouldn't do it. He knows that I've got very particular and limited tastes in bangles, and it would be too easy to slip up. He did buy me jewellery once, but it was something I'd tried on whilst window-shopping and loved. He went back secretly and bought it for me. Romantic old bugger - he'll kill me for going public though
