I have always thought as long as it is a controlled area (ie away from residents etc) the girls are looked after by the state (ie no thugs/pimps). I cannot see a problem. I mean they say its the oldest profession dont they? and its hardly likely to go away is it? I presume its image is always a dirty drugged up 15yr old pushed onto the game by her abusive father roaming back streets with a battered face from the last client.

It's time that the bigotted in GB gave up their hates and legalised this trade, if nothing else but for the protection of the workers. The bigotted who rely on texts thoudsands of years old should lose their madcap voice on this, we're in 2005 FFS!
The "workers" should be regularly tested, work in clean and checked environements, as mentioned perhaps in areas out of the general publics view as in Germany or Holland, and then (note! Gordy the Purse!) they can tax them as well...
BUT protection for the "workers" and their "clients" is paramount, get the various criminal gangs/persons out of the trade and you'll also have a healthier business in all respects.

Agreed. Its not a service I would use, personally, but I don't see why it shouldn't be legal - with adequate and proper protection and working conditions for for those who want to work in it.
Regulation would also make it easier to spot those who are being forced into such work - and get them help. Once "clients" could buy the legal version - why go to illegal suppliers? The thugs and criminals currently in the process would be squeezed out by good old market forces...in time.

Like all attempts at enforcing prohibition, it will fail dismally and lead to ever greater criminality in the provision of a service for which there is a large and well known market. It seems that by their very nature, politicians are incapable of learning the lessons of history.
Very True

Yep, simple really.
But a window of opportunity, between outdated ‘Victorian’ morality and feminism, to do just that seems to have gone. If Labour did such a thing now they would go against one of their key supporters, hysterical feminists who want to end the 'exploitation' of women.

In theory that's great but the reality is that "away from residents" means Industrial Areas these are pretty grim places out of hours at the best of times and are often blighted by burnt out cars and vandalism. How ever throw in door way prostitution to the equation and the areas would be driven even lower, It would be another bollox to industry and another expense as I can't see the council sending round the cleaners to pick up the condoms, hypodermics, and burnt foil from my reception area every morning which always create such a good impression with clients, the cleaners won't touch them because of what they are, so then what happens? It would also create such an appealing atmosphere and encourage me to work all sorts of late hours to catch up if I knew I had to run the gauntlet of street walkers when I leave the office.......not
However as with all ideas like this I can see the merits of them, just not in my back yard!!!! and I guess that'll be the case with most other people.

Thats just the point though - if its controlled and legalised, they could be in a nice location, next to a bar in town and you'd never know it. A discrete door, no "streetwalkers", an its just another business.
You'llnever eradicate the lower-end of it, but if you legalise the middle and upper range, you'll make some cash in taxes (and then some!) and it shouldn't affect an area at all.
