Are there any electricians on PH that'd be able to tell me what they think of this quote:

Supply and fit of 6W CSU, 2 x 32A MCB, 1 x 16A MCB and 2 x 6A MCB's. "Includes RCD protection for ground floor sockets but not bonding for gas or water"

£325.

I have my own opinion but I wondered what others thought.

Thanks.
Phil

Does a bit. If you're in Surrey I can recommend someone.

parts would cost around £70 for the box with built in RCD and mains breaker from Screwfix, and the MCBs are £5 each from the same source. The job would only take in the region of an hour, 2 at the most. Sounds expensive to me.

Bonding has to comply with regs and in most cases need changing...Test and inspection of installed components and certification to comply with regs...There is more to it these days!

That's shockingly expensive! grabs coat&hat and runs for the door

I would have expected 200-250, but then I live up north.

agreed, but the job quoted for didn't include bonding according to the original poster. No mention either of test or inspection - all which, if included in the quote, would make the original costs seem more reasonable.

with regard to these new regs, if I wire up an external PIR light how does anyone know I did it after the new law came in?

You'd have to make sure you used older cable.

Why would you? Did all stocks of cable suddenly change overnight when the new law came in?

Funnily enough the colour of the insulation of cables changed from white to grey not so long ago, not sure if this was to do with the new laws or not

On the subject of wiring up a PIR as you said who's going to know and furthermore who's going to check ?

My sparky said the new grey cable was due to regs. He also said the colours for live and neutral have changed and reckons this will probably cost a few lives.
