You turn it on, the lens pops out and the cover thing opens up, then the whole camera turns itself off, with the lens out. You press the button to turn it on again, lens goes in, comes out again and turns off again.

On playback mode it is fine and the battery indicator doesn't suggest there is a problem there. There is space on the memory card too. It has got normal batteries in it though, rather than rechargeables. Any one else experienced this and how can it be fixed?

the symbol suggests the batteries are full when it is on playback mode, when on photo mode you barely have time to see the screen before it shuts down. Odd it shuts down with the lens out and the lens cover open, rather than closing the cover and retracting the lens, which is what it is supposed to do when turned off. It is almost like it has got confused as to what it is supposed to do when turned on.

I'll try it with some new batteries, but am thinking it probably needs replaced.

Exactly the same thing was happening to my Sony DSC W1. When I put newly recharged batteries in, rather than alkaline, it seemed to right the problem.... although I suspect it might happen again.....
