Our sausage dog, Courage (!!!) jumped off our bed on Sunday, and yelped, he hurt his leg and was limping, but otherwise, was like his normal self (very naughty!) We rang the vets to ask advice, and they said he has most likely sprained something, and leave it a couple of day to see if it gets better.
We have done that, but tonight, he seems not be able to stand up, his back legs are all over the place! We have felt everywhere to see if there is a spot where it hurts, but nothing! When he stands, he seems to arch his back. We thought that maybe he was a little constipated, as he hasn’t had a poo for a couple of days, but we just taken him out again (mostly carrying him), and he’s still the same, it’s as though, for some reason, his back legs have a mind of their own! Looks like a trip to the vet tomorrow, if there’s no signs of progress!
He’s always been active, is only 2 and a half, but all he’s doing now is falling onto his side and sleeping! Any advice? (He still wags his tail enthusiastically when the word ‘walkies’, is mentioned!)

Cheers

Chris

Sausage dog are sods for not knowing their limits. Tara is forever trying to bounce off the sofa and she is 14!! Keep them immobile for a couple of days. But that sounds like spine problems. Have they ever fitted? As our little girl just shorted-out and lost all control of her legs for a few days. Our spaniel also started with that problem (ended up in a dog wheelchar). You may also need an X-ray and strong anti inflamatory drugs.

Thank you , No, he has never fitted, he just wants to sleep now! We'll take him to the vets tomorrow, see what they say - it's bizzare his rear legs have gone funny, he's only young!

Probably needs some sort of anti-inflamatory, might have done something odd while trying to avoid putting weight on his leg? Our dog (like a sausage dog on stilts!) spent hours sitting on a chair by the fire, with her head hanging over the edge. A couple of days later she was finding it painful to move her head down to eat. A visit to the vet for an injection and she was back to her old nutty self by evening

I wonder if he has maybe slipped a disc or put pressure on his spine? Dogs with long backs are well known for having back problems aren't they? He may have twisted himself and injured it slightly. Defo get to a vets asap if he cannot walk and cannot poo. This sounds to me like problems with his nerves in his back.

Thanks guys , he's quiet and asleep now, we have REALLY prodded every part of his body, but he just loves it! We will take him to the vets tomorrow, one way or the other, he will be sorted, we miss his naughtiness too much!

Well, he’s been up to the vets, the vet thinks that it is a spinal prob, however, he said that it is most likely caused by swelling elsewhere – he also has a temperature (109, should be 101)
So, he has given us both anti inflammatory and anti biotic tablets. We were told that this kind of problem can take at least 5 weeks to be put right, letting nature take its course, worse case scenario is either a £3K operation on the spine, , or a set of wheels for his back legs, if the problem turns out to be more serious than he initially thinks!
Poor fella, he’s just only turned 2, and he's such a loving little thing!

Is a sausage dog strong enough at the shoulders to use a doggy wheelchair?

I hope so! He's quite a strong little dog, (well, was! ), he's in his bed now, drugged up to the eyeballs - am sure he just called me man!

I think the anti-inflamatories must contain some sort of sedative to keep the dog still while the drug works - our dog was zonked for the whole day. Unfortunately that meant she was 'fully charged' when it was bedtime and she started bouncing off the furniture!

Poor little chap IF the problem is his spine I recommend these people www.dogmobile-online.com/
they worked wonders for our George (www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?t=224995).
Very quick, well packed and well made. You could have "borrowed" Georges old one BUT the wrong size im afaid.
Hardest part is making them go forwards, they prefer to go backwards for some odd reason. IF he has some back leg movement I suggest that the best one is for the rear legs to hang down otherwise they struggle.

Anyway best of luck for the poor fella and feel free to PM me for any more advice for dog chairs.

LOL, he loves the cats, they even come with us when we walk the dogs!, that cat, usually sleeps on top of Courage, purring away, digging her claws into his back at the same time!
He has always been very athletic for such a breed (had one before, not nearly as 'brave'), he even managed to jump onto a chair, then onto the table, then take and eat a whole packet of 6 jam donuts whilst we were out! We knew it was him, as he looked like a carrage balloon!
Thanks for the advice (especially Peter ), am trying to look on the positive side, and hope its just swelling that is hurting his spine.
