MSN messenger and IT :-(
Discussion
My company's IT dept has the same policy - ie:can't install instant messaging of any kind. However, I've manageed to get round this by using http://webmessenger.msn.com/.
It may not have all the bells and whistles as the version we all download and install, but it does exactly what it says on the tin.

They do this here too. I can get round it by renaming it:
C:Program FilesMSN Messengermsnmsgr.exe
to
C:Program FilesMSN Messengermsnmsgr1.exe
and change your short cut to look for C:Program FilesMSN Messengermsnmsgr1.exe rather than without the 1 before the .exe
However, if IT have put you a firewall and blocked the IP ports messenger uses, you can't do anything about it (without bypassing the firewall).

Looks like the IT bods where you work have discovered this site, then. Mine haven't sussed it......YET!
At my place we don't object to the concept of instant messaging: that's just fine. The time still goes with text messages or phone calls anyway, even if IM isn't available.
The main problems with client-based IM are twofold: 1) Every now and then, some *really* nasty security flaws crawl out of the woodwork. 2) They all now come with file transfer capabilities as standard which makes teh chances of an accident occurring with a sensitive file that much greater.
If there was an IM program out there that *just* did IM, we'd be less jumpy about it...
